Right o'. So I replaced the starter relay, which was indeed fooked. However, the sprag clutch is also goosed I recon. A heads up from the seller as to "how to start the bike from cold" might, nah, would have been helpful before I destroyed internal engine components.

What's done is done, and I like getting my hands dirty and looking inside engines. I do not particularly like spending a couple of hundred quid on parts that could have been kept good with a sentence. But like I said, its done.

Looks like this will be my first engine job in my newly renovated workshop.

Have a look on here mucker, I'm sure Roy posted up a how to not so long ago.

It might be helpful if yer unsure.

Never done one, but my Haynes arrived yesterday and I'm an engineer. Having rebuilt motorcycles from parts in boxes, I'm not particularly worried about the technicalities of the job. It's a mornings work if I beast in, although I will take longer and give myself a chance to investigate other engine parts whilst I'm in there. I've got another 4 bikes to play with just now, so I'll probably wait till its not 0 degrees outside before I commit myself to the workshop.

I went into the garage to swith the optimate on,realised it was bloody freezing, shut the door and retreated to the warmth of the central heating lol....far to cold to be working out there :)

:laugh

Yeah, when the snot on my nose freezes to my beard, it's too cold be in the garage.

With the battery freshly charged, use the cold start lever about half way.Do not touch the throttle.
As above with multiple starting attempts.Be carefull of knackering the sprag.
When, and or,if it starts,...slowly knock off the lever and use the throttle to control the revs.

this is my starting method and it works like a charm every time - and i ride mine thru winter. I set the fast idle to bring the revs down to about 1500 until she's warm (over 60C for my bike).

Couple of things for you newbies
- don't forget the voltage display in the dash is out - normally by about half a volt or more.
- check your earth connection

Didn't know that.. Good info (Thanks!)

With battery fully charged, started machine and ran mine up to 4k rpm (per manual) and was getting 13.1v on dash battery readout.
After 5 mins did it again and was only getting a low 12.4v :crazy

Manual states readout at 4k should be between 13v and 15v.

So... sounds like 12.4 = 12.9 ++ and all's relatively well then!

PS: Planning to check earth connection and brown connector at 'sorting' opportunity, and will pop a voltmeter across the battery terminals to check actual alternator output..

New Zeeland winter vs Scottish winter. Being an Arctic Nation, we can get it bad sometimes. It was -6C when I left for work the other morning, and I live in the city! The hills can drop to -27C with the wind chill making it -50C. We don't mess about here boy.

I have a digital battery charger connected to all of my bikes. The Tuono is a true 13-14V. My Sprag Clutch is goosed, that is the problem. I have stopped trying. I just MoT'd one of the other bikes today, so the twin can wait for the sun, much the same as the rest of us :thumbup

Hmmm i don't think it shouldn't be going that low after 5 minutes. Once you have done your connectors, check it again with a multimeter

A reg rec converts the 60-90 odd volts that the engine generates to about 13.5 to 14v. It does that by turning the excess into heat (basically) hence why they are located in a ventilated area. When they are old they get less effective. If your battery is not getting a decent charge from the reg rec, the bike can kill it. I'm not saying your is buggered, but something seems off.

I put a Rick's motorsports one in mine and it's been fine. the shindengen MOSFET jobbies are really good. Theres plenty of stuff on the forums on what model.

I hear ya. I'm a Brit living in Kiwiland, and the winters in this part (Wellington) are milder than back home... It's about equivalent to Cornwall as it rarely gets to negative figures... And the snow only falls down to around 600 Metres above sea level... I do miss the snow actually...

Miss the snow bruva? Even when you have to dig it out your driveway to get your bike out the garage... Nah, you enjoy that sunshine. And good on ya for making the move.
