I thought I'd share my woes. So Ive serviced my Tuono (overfilled the oil, ahem) and its had a few starting gremlins sorted by prev owner. YTX14 battery and uprated solenoid. But the intermittant failing to start continues.

I thought I'd sorted it (fresh fuel, new plugs, air filter, clean airbox, fully charged battery) and it has been fine.

Except when I flooded it Fri night after work, but it did fire up eventually.

Even had a ride out with Gez on saturday over to Squires, had a brill afternoon.

I was so keen, I cleaned it on Sunday.

and now it wont start?! I think I've sprayed some water on to the coils as it is turning over but will not fire. I used a hosepipe only.

Left it to dry out overnight, tried it first thing, but still nothing.

I am not in the least bit electrically minded, so its booked it to be looked at..:banghead::dunno
 
I have done that a couple of times on mine, always starts next day though?
 
done same mi sen...take plugs out itl be flooded..took me 3 days get mine going...watch for headers being full of juice ..mine went boom when i got it going i was deaf for 2 days
 
try:
1. take plugs out and clean
2. check for spark and or/no corrosion in plug caps on HT leads
3. if flooded leave for a while with plugs out for fuel to evap
4. camshaft sensor check this isn't wet

good luck
also check you don't have water int he fuel - I've had a dicky over-flow/drain on my tank - let water into the fuel tank
 
Cheers for taking the time to read and reply.

I can't get near it for a couple of days now, which will hopefully allow it to dry out. Battery is on an optimate, so the plan is to try it one more time, then whip the plugs as advised.

It did this last time pre service, and I did get it going from a jump start off the car. I'd like to avoid this again if I can.

EL & Roy, did you take all 4 plugs out? I can get 3 out but the front top 1 needed the airbox to come off.
 
Roy, how did you solve water in the filler cap? Mines got the same prob, I am soaking it up with tissue at present. Not good.
 
Gents, plugs are out and on the side. As predicted, wet and smelling of petrol.

Took the side covers off and sprayed WD over the coil packs. I'll leave it a few days and try again.

I realised that I hadnt routed my throttle cables properly under the bracket attached to the airbox nr the headstock which may explain my intermittent sticking throttle problem (another story). Poss had been trapping the cables between the tank and frame. Gave the linkages and return springs a decent spray of WD for good measure.

easy fix

remove tank and clear out the nipples under the tank,,the ones with the blue pipes on them there ally and go all fury white ..i used a small drill bit to clear mine its only the 1st inch that blocks you may need to do it twice a year ..theres only 1 that blocks up....so keep on top of it cos if theres water in your filler orriface when you open the cap it goes straight in the tank

there so predictable the gen ones...mines the same..if cables arnt under the clamp at the headstock the throttle sticks ..not a lot but enough to **** you up

theres a bit of a knack to starting these things especially from cold
igni on
throttle advance lever on the left ..push oit open full
poke the button...do not throttle it up...it can flood the bugger
back off the throttle advance so its tickin over about 2k
now your ready to go
knock of lever when its up to 50 degrees
 
Mines a Gen 2 -only got a measly two plugs. But yes - already cleaned the furriness from the overflow nipple.
 
Cheers chaps, I really appreciate the info. I was beginning to think Id bought a woofer so it's good to hear that what I have are relatively common quirks which have been fixed easily by others.

Quick update. On the advice of bluerob I bought a Varta TTZ14 s-bs. With an impressive 230cca. Previous ytx14bs had 200 which was an upgrade on the stock 180.

After drying plugs and cylinders out, it fired up first touch.

Well chuffed. Cheers guys.
