Fork Leg Damage

Hi All, just went out to put my tax disc in....as found these marks on the back of the fork tubes, pic 1 shows the black coating gone and the metal underneath almost powdery?


I have no idea what caused this or how serious it is, there is a similar prob on the other leg.

What do you reckon, I am at a loss.

looks to me like the muddy is rubbing on the fork tube to me !! summat not quite right there -- suspension too soft ??

It looks like the alloy has been attacked by something,,,,,,,,,,,brake fluid maybe.

Were there previous owners of yer machine mucker.

Could have the been the forks were removed to do some work on the seals and the tubes were left lying on a bench that had all sorts of **** on it. ???

I had something similar on my Kawa, it was a short 20mm dia alloy tube that transferred the coolant from the thermostat to the rad, it just crumbled into powder when I touched it.

Give the area a light rub wae some scotchbrite and put some clear nail varnish on it for now, it should stop any further corrosion.

Definitely a strange one, btw I hope my diagnosis is oot the windae and it wiz just the muddy rubbing.

It's where the front muguard has chafed against the fork leg taking the annodise finish off.
Then, at a later date, someone has dropped the fork leg out, and re-fitted it rotated in the yokes by about 90 degrees.
It's cosmetic, nothing to worry about.
A little wire wool to clean off the *****, finished off with a dab of black Hammerite...sorted

Thanks guys just stopped me panicking, On closer inspection and further thought the 6 hour ride last weekend probably thinned the fork oil out and allowed more travel than usual.....the left leg is worse due to the "Aprilia" fit TAX DISC HOLDER catching it at full compression.....

Little rub down some ACF 50 for now until I get them stripped and anodised.

Cheers Aldo previous owners made the mistake of taking it to an Aprilia "specialist" here in the south and lets just say the servicing and care has left a little to be desired!! I have spent 6 months sorting electrical gremlins, fuel gremlins and a new drivetrain (both sprockets and chain) new bolts in the rear one as the originals were loose while I was riding it for the first couple of months of ownership.....

I am not a natural spanner man but with the help of this and other forums, some time on the phone to the Griffmiester and a good friend teaching me the basics of attacking any job I am really loving the bike!!

P.S. I have a sonic bath in me shed for cleaning alloy now......amazing on cruddy old bits!!
