stabilizers/additives

Anyone using fuel additives have any problems? I recently added a fuel stabilizer (Maxima) to deal with the potential problem of 10% ethanol in California petrol. I added the correct amount as directed. Just recently on the same tank I had the engine sputter and could not get it to run properly...
