Alright folks? So I got pissed off with my battery not having the guts to start my bike after a week or so lying in the shed, so I've got a new Yuasa YTX14. Filling it with the electrolyte at the moment. What I wanna know is, is my charger suitable for this type of battery? Its and oldish "Pro User" charger rated at 4A. Theres no trickle facility its just either on or off. It says its for use with lead-acid batteries only, is this ok to charge my new batt with or will I **** it up"¦"¦.please advise, I need to go for a ride soon or I'ma get super crabbit!! :banghead
Cheers

Dont use it mate. When it says on the side of the charger 'lead acid batteries only',thats exactly what it means. That charger is not designed for gel type batteries.Modern motorcycle batteries need a modern trickle charger.

It should have enough charge to start the bike after you fill it.

Fill it, wait 20 mins, put it on the bike & start it.

Then ride for an hour and with any luck you won't ever need a charger!!

I'm on my second uprated battery and I can go two weeks easy without using my Optimate, and I only do short journeys most of the time.

Stix is right, the new battery should be fine to start the bike after you put the electrolyte in. That charger was probably just for car batteries, as it is not regulated it would cook your new battery if you left it on. Keith is mistaken, Gel & wet batteries are both lead acid,& your new one is not gel but maintenance free, that is you cant take the lid off top it up.
Keith is right about getting a modern smart charger.

Sheesh,.....I cant get owt right at the moment. How the fook did I come up with gel battery,...I must be getting old!

As stix says....... I have tuo and s/triple with sealed batts and also my er5 kwack batt is same as tuo and i have never charged them before use, never had bother m8. But do keep the Tuo/Tri on optimate 4,s.

Cool, thanks for the advice guys, will try the batt in the bike tomorrow and maybe invest in a trickle charger too.
Cheers

Bike started no worries after filling the battery. Have now binned my clunky old charger and bought a smart charger for longer lay ups......thanks for the advice folks. :)
