Went to start bike yesterday but wouldnt start... Jump started no problem at all... Decided to take off battery and put on Opimate over night.. Got up today, green light was showing on optimate so fitted back onto bike and still wouldnt start... Does this mean my battery needs replacing?? Confused as optimate showing ok with a green light!! Im sick....

Is it turning over... if it is dont keep turning it over or youll do seriouse damage :roll

It could be your starter solenoid playing up... check to see if the contacts are tight and clean... if you keep trying to turn it over you will damage the sprag and thats costly , a replacement solenoid will be pennies compared to replacing your sprag unit:thumbup

Bike will jump start no bother off booster battery... Just clicking as though battery is flat without jump start?? Its stood all winter.. Had battery on optimate overnight, retried again today and still feels like not enough power in battery....

sound like the battery is shot. YTX14BS Varta, Bosch or Yuasa. Put new battery on optimate over night before connecting to the bike to get full capacity out of the battery

Bike currently has a YTX12 on it only has 10A, thought Milles needed at least 12A if not better still 14A.... How come Optimate showing green light if battery is dud?? Thought they checked them etc....??

The voltage level might be ok but if the batterys is U/S there would be no oomfp behind it (not enough amps))

Its lacking oomff alright....10A surely not enough for the V-Twin... The optimate was going to get slung out too!!! New battery here we come... What kind of price or is it down to make of battery!!

£50-£60 for a good one :dunno there is a thread somewhere on here with the battery numbers to go for :thumbup

Whatever you do don't throw the Optimate out. It's not that that's at fault, it's the battery. As Sprocker says, good volts but no amps. You'll need to keep the bike hooked up to the optimate when not in use as your new battery will still need to be in tip top condition to cope with cold start. This is another alternative YTZ14SBS for even more cold start cranking amps

Went and got a battery last week myself (YTZ14BS). Cost £40 but the sales woman said that she has sold it at the old price as lead is in huge demand at the mo so expect to pay £50 ish. Its def the bat also, i had the same prob. When i put the new bat on it kicked up on the first turn of the starter :)

Thanks for your help gents... New battery then and take it from there.... Speed sensor to sort out now, its going biserk at the moment!!

Still no joy!!

Update.. Had battery upto local bike mechanic.. Been tested, fully charged, drop tested and all ok... Tried on bike again this morning and just clicking when turning the key?? No attempt to turn over....

You have knackered the solenoid switch trying to start it with a slow battery, replace switch with a yamaha one, do a search on here for yamaha solenoid for the part number

Thanks... Solenoid on order from Yam £29.75 and should be here in 3 days!! Will get this bike running soon I hope!!

Sorted.......

Quick update... Fitted new Westco Battery 12v 12A and fired straight up... Got me Dad to check all electrics as he is a sparky and all ok.... Dad mentioned the draw the lights have alone on the battery before even cranking it over... Suggested lights should be on a timed relay so they come on automatically once the bike has fired up?! Got battery from www.2ndbite.co.uk......... Cheapest place we found and next day delivery?!
