Wont start - new battery and relay fitted?

Buggeration.

Relay arrived, just fitted it. Still won't start. Brand new battery fully charged shows healthy volts and upon thumbing the starter it turns over fast and perfectly but refuses to fire up. I've tried it with the fast idle lever fully open, closed and in between. I've also tried it with the fast idle lever completely closed and then held the throttle wide open but it just turns over.

I can hear the fuel pump priming if I put my ear to the tank, although (and I can't be sure) it doesn't sound 'as loud' when it primes compared to last year?. I'm not sure, I might have flooded the thing again as its smelling of petrol again now but I would have thought any fuel would have evaporated since my last unsuccessful attempt days ago?.

I don't really know what to do now. The fuel has been sat in the tank for 14 months so it might be worth topping the tank up with fresh stuff and I was thinking about bunging in a bottle of Wynns Dry Fuel in case there is any water swilling around in there but other than that I'm at a loss of what my next move should be. I'm confident the sprag is ok as I haven't heard the tell tale metallic 'clunk' yet.

Hi Check your plugs, when i first got mine it was a Bast*$#d to get started put in standard plug and started fine still had issuse but then the sprag gear went. New sprag and sound as a pound. Scott told me to spray brake cleaner straight in to the throttle bodies to get it to fire up might be worth ago:confused

if you have iridium plugs in it, they do not like being left standing for long periods of time, always start with fresh plugs ( standard ones ). and this may sound daft but it happened to me tonight, trying to start the wifes bike 15 mins struggling scratching head and swearing only to find i had pressed the kill switch and not noticed derrrrr,

Standard NGK DCPR9E plugs in there just now. I've ordered a fresh set of 4 and they should arrive tomorrow so I'll get the plugs gapped and changed and drain the tank of the old fuel before filling up with fresh Optimax Nitro. Fingers crossed that will do the trick.

Let us know how you got on, looking to change mine weekend as im having problems getting started at times as well.

RSV 69, I would check your plugs as a matter of course I don't know what sort of milage you get out of the plug on the mille's. Good luck

Hi
Have wiring mods been done, check all wiring connections clean and spray all connector plugs with contact cleaner remove and clean earth connections on right hand side of machine on frame and engine. Miles will always seem to turn over ok but any power reduction or bad earth etc the ignition system does not like it.

Not done the wiring mod (brown connector you mean?) as yet. Still waiting on new spark plugs to turn up before attempting anything further. Once they arrive I'll drain stale fuel, refill tank with Shell Optimax Nitro petrol, fit new plugs and put a squirt of brake cleaner down the bores. Then check and clean all connectors and have another go.

Brake cleaner? Tell me more

Just for info ...
Ŵhen I drained my tank the other day due to split overflow hoses there was 20 litres in there so ended up with 2 buckets and the last bit in a washing up bowl thing......the last bit of petrol and some small bits floating in it which the filter would have stopped anyway but one left to settle the bits were at the bottom and there was a small amount of darker petrol sitting at below the fresh fuel about half a litre ...so that never went back in.

20 litres!!!. Feckin' 'ell!!!.

I'm pretty sure theres hardly any fuel in the tank just now, maybe 5 litres at most. I hope!. I'll keep a couple of empty buckets handy though.

Apparently the brake cleaner assists with firing the mixture but in hindsight I think I'll just fit new plugs and go with that before squirting anything near the plugs/bores.

I was a bit hesitant about the brake cleaner and just made do with the spark plugs and it was ok. Make sure your battery is fully charged as well.

Roger that!!. New battery has been fully charged and on the Datatool Conditioner.

Same stuff, in theory. Nonchlorinated brake cleaners are highly flammable in the same way as easy start or carb cleaners are.

Right, bloody thing was bugging me so I decided to at least make a start. Just popped the tank up on its prop, disconnected the QD fuel fitting on the left side of the tank and drained it into a fuel can by just using a thin metal rod to depress the valve in the QD fitting. Was annoyed to find that when I last parked it up all that time ago I must have only just filled the tank because there was about 15 litres of the stuff came out. Luckily I had a 10L jerrycan and a 5L plastic fuel can so they took the lot. No more fuel coming out of the QD now so I'm guessing the tank is now essentially empty although the rest of the fuel system will still have a bit sat in it.

Got stuff on this afternoon otherwise I'd have fitted the new plugs in there too and had a bash at starting it once a fresh batch of V-Power Nitro was dumped in there. That'll need to wait for a day or so though but at least I'm making some progress!!

On a related note, anyone know if local authority recycling centres will take petrol for disposal?. I know they take used engine oil but can they take petrol too, anyone know?

Try some ether down the throttle bodies bud to get it goin

SHE LIVES!!!!!

Topped up tank and tried firing her up. Took a while to crank over and catch and then died a few times so had to do a bit of juggling with the fast idle lever and eventually got her fired up and ticking over. Eventually settled down into a rather lumpy tickover and sort of cleared the throat a bit then settled down and sounded just like before I packed her away for her long term hibernation. Awesome. Forgot how loud and deep the Renegade cans were, think most of the dogs in the neighbourhood have started barking.

So happy I could cartwheel down the street.

Now to get a few other little things checked over, give her a good spring clean and then booked in for an MoT. Many thanks to everyone who chipped in with advice. :thumbup

Fair play bud, I know just how you feel. Finally got mine sorted and it should of been one of the first things to check. Corroded starter relay terminals...DOH. Bring the sun shine on!
