Winter Tyres

I'm nearing the wear lines on my rear Pirelli Diablo Corsa III (the front still has a bit of meat left) and about to head off to Wales for a week.

I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for a winter road tyre?

I'll ride all the way through winter on the road (well except when it's snowing - been there done that, brought the replacement parts) which means it will have the wonders of the British weather thrown at it, so it will need to water disperse relatively OK - oh and if it lasted more than 3000 miles then that would be awesome.

I've used Bridgestones for years, had a dally with Dunlop's (which I hated), when I brought this Mille it had Michelins 2CT which were very worn so I couldn't really tell, and have just gone through a couple of sets of Pirelli Diablo Corsa III which I really rather liked, apart from the rear wearing quite quickly.

Any pointers?

I also found the Pirellis wore very quickly (900 miles for the rear) and have now got the michelins 2CT's on, and am very pleased with these and they're wearing far better than the pirellis.
Can't comment on winter tyres though, as those days have long gone..Damaged my legs when younger and the cold and damp drives me nuts.

Michelin Pilot Road II's, I know a couple of lads who have, and swear by them, for the wetter weather :thumbup

what about those Avon storm thingies? meant to be awesome in the wet. I ride all year round and are thinking of a pair. I usually run diablo 111's
cheers Ck

I'll second that, Michelin Pilot Road II, a great tyre with all the grip you will ever need for the road, excellent wet weather performance and last exceptionally well too.

CK, a buddy of mine has fitted his zx12R with Avon Storm St's. In his opinion he rates them very highly, even better than the Bridgstone 021 he had on before. They are lasting very well too

Did they say how the Storms lasted and what they were as a dry tyre? I'm off the FWR tomorrow so I'll keep you guys posted.

I've ended up with the Avons (AV55 12/70 Front & AV56 180/55 rear). Interesting one guy mentioned that the Dunlop Sportmax were good but couldn't vouch for how long they'd last.

First impressions are they are deep treaded, and make the bike feel very nible and it flops into corners. Though that could still be the non-squared off honeymoon period.

Keep us posted as to the quality, grip and mileage of your rubber. Like a few others, I sport Michelin Road Pilots 2CT all year and on both my bikes. I have done now 7k on the Mille-R and still have 5mm thread on my rear. So, what it would probably come down to is value for money. The Michelins cost a little more, but I find they last a fair bit more.

I'll second that Aus, Pilot Power's are King!!
Never found any benefit in the 2CT's though.

2 CT's on both my Mille and Speed Triple (daily bike) and cannot fault them!!..............:thumbup

I have just ridden a VFR with Metzeler Mez4 and nearly fell off in a roundabout. It was wet but I was only doing 30mph. Last night I felt the back going all over the place, and I can feel whether the paint is gloss or emulsion.
But today was the scariest moment of my long riding career, I can only thank my guardian angel, who let me draw from my experience and allowed me not to panic. My right foot went on the floor and I manage to pick the bike up and not fall.
METZELER are RUBBISH.
Michelin Road Pilot 2CT forever...

It's only been a quick 800 miles on the new Avon's and so far I'd say they are very very good.

Those 800 miles were around North Wales last week, when there was snow on the surrounding hills and salt and general crap all over the road. Not once did they slip out of line, and the time was spent working on confidence and how much further I could push the tyres; we weren't hanging about either.

The other guys were on BT021's Corsa III's and Dunlop Sportmax and they all had some moments of rear sliding or sideways drift. So all in all very impressed - let's just hope they last long as well, though judging by the depth of tread and the lack of wear so far it's looking good.

Crikey, gotta be keen, too arc it up on snow or icy roads  go easy bud, have fun!
