Winter things to do.

You can tell the weather has turned because the amount of new posts / messages has almost dried up.

I dont intend to put my T on the road over the winter months, but I intend to fully strip the rear suspension / linkages off & clean / repack the grease.

I am at work so I cant check, but does the Tuono have grease nipples on the back pivots ?

Has anyone ever drilled / tapped to fit them ?

I ask because my DRZ has them all over the back suspension & seems like a good idea.:thumbup

Apart from that, I may get around to fitting some black levers before Brooksy takes them back.

You can't put nipples into the dog bone for two reasons
1 Drilling it to receive a nipple would weaken it beyond the point of safety...there's not enough meat on it.
2 The pressurised grease would pop the seals out.

I even thought of drilling down the centre of the bearing bolt, but it's not really thick enough to do this, again without weakening the bolt.

Thanks for this Tifa.

On the Suzuki, all drillings & nipples are through the swinging arm or through the thick part of the pivot link, none through the dog bones.

Not sure how the Aprilia items are assembled yet, but on the DRZ the dog-bones dont pivot on anything, they nip onto a central sleeve that pivots in a big central bearing.

Its that big central bearing that is fed by a nipple that is tapped into the thick part of the ally pivot link.

I think the only bearings that are not fed by a nipple are at either end of the shocker.

There is also a proven mod to drill & tap the head-stock to get grease into this.

Being an old timer with a clanky background, all of the above makes sence.

I will keep you posted if I decide to proceed or even take some shots of the DRZ system to give you a better idea.

OT, yer making sense with whit yer say but no matter how much yer try to avoid inspecting the bearings it's still the only way to be sure of their condition.

So how long would yer pump grease in afore yer actually had a look.

It may sound like I'm questioning yer suggestion, I'm not.

I just think it's a lot of work for very little gain. Maybe it's jist me but until I see the bearings I'm nervous.

i thought the big problem was the lack of grease and the bearings seizing, if they are greased regularly they won't seize and if they wear you will be able to feel the free play, plus it would be picked up at mot time, as long as they are free the dogbone won't snap ?

Mucker yer never shoogled the dog leg links aboot, so shut it until yer have.

Believe this, yer KNOW nothing of which yer speak.

Jist humour me mucker and tell me how yer pick up a bearing fail on the dog links.

I seem a bit harsh, but yer cannae **** wae this bit of yer machine.

Aldo when i was at Griff's he showed me a dog bone that had broke and that was roughly how he explained why they break. i have seen on here that its a big problem if it fails i also watched one of his lads take mine apart and apply new grease ,tricky bit of maintenance as they fall out when dissembled.

I'm with Aldo on this one....it's never a bad idea to pull these things apart now and again to check what's really going on in there...
As long as you keep then clean and greased up, there's no reason why the D/B bearings shouldn't last the life of the bike.
At worst, it's only an afternoons fettling, with time for plenty of coffee breaks.

Brooksy, did you get a stand that can lift your bike up to take the weight off the swinging arm bearings ?

Perhaps I'm just a bit crap but this is my bike experience from now until maybe March.

Ride it unless its wazzing down.

If I ride it when its wazzing down, at some point wash it.

Don't fall off.

?

just remember not to use his best torque wrenches as hammers....or crowbars for that matter ;)
no problem Tifa he has big hammers anyway plus he will end up doing most of the work anyway and i will end up being his grease monkey :lol

it's one of those jobs, do it once, takes ages. once you'vce learnt, it's a piece of cake and takes half the time.
