Why do exhausts pop flames on deceleration?

I know it has to do with the air/fuel mixture but I thought it was because the bike was running rich not lean. I was just reading on a Ducati forum and they were talking about it being do to running lean. Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure race cans / systems do this as they actually flow more air so the mixture ends up a tiny wee bit more lean. Because of this, any unburnt fuel will ignite randomly within the exhaust system instead of in the engine which then results in a popping and banging or a flame out the end of the cans in some circumstances.

Personally, I love it. My Renegades pop and bang on the over run with the odd flame here and there emerging from the cans.

I agree it looks awesome. Unfortunately even with my collector mod, slip-on, open intake I don't get it anymore having adjusted my TPS to a perfect 0 and having an awesome Dr. Rossi chip. Looks like my Air/Fuel is almost perfect.

my mates tl1000r pops flames out of both exhausts and looks awesome when out on a dusk ride. however, as good as it looks, i did keep warning him that it meant his bike wasnt running right and eventually it burnt his plugs out and his exhaust was a rattly piece of ****! looks great and sounds brilliant but just be warned that it could turn expensive!
