Just read fast bikes article on older bargain buy bikes to which I was very happy to see my bike win the shootout ....................

I was wondering has any1 owned the standard mille then rode the same model 'r' and for everyday use mostly on bumpy uk roads what is best as the mag says the r has hard sussies???
I was thinking of selling my now sorted standard mille in a month or so and getting an r but not so sure now as I will not be doing much track riding.... more sports touring so thining mebe stop with what I have........any opinions??

Own an 03R & service & tune 99/03 RSV 's & Tuono's ... standard & Ohlins , apart from the Radial brake 03R with Ohlins the bikes aren't nite & day different .. but it all depends wether you can ride a stock RSV to its limit , if so then simply up grading the stock suspension will be the way to go & maybe fitting some uprated calipers , but never found the standard brembo units to be weak ... An R in any model 2000 to 03 Gen1 will come with carbonfibre, light wheels as well , but all that can be retro fitted . Personally stick to what you have & get your suspension sorted if not already done ... its the first thing I tell my customers to do once thats sorted you will wonder why you hadn't done it earlyer ...

people spend thousands chasing a few bhp and unless your a track god its just pub chat:roll

if they spent £400-£500 on the forks and a shock service at a specialist that would be money invested wisely.

my rsv forks were fettled by Kais and the shock is serviced with fresh oil and matched to the front oil weight and its as good as any bike ive had through the bends.

as for brakes fitting top spec pads works wonders (why the fook do people fit things like goldfren ) when quality pads are what's needed.
mine came with full goldfren pads fitted and they were wooden and week.
its now got the latest ebc's and its as id expect a set of big brembo's to stop a bike fierce and with a bite like you need on a big motorcycle:thumbup

lighter wheels are a night and day thing and if you can afford the cost its a sound investment (sell afterwards too so should recoup most of the cost) but again really a track thing as faster you go the more you appreciate them :thumbup

if i had the wedge id have got an R but im very happy with my bog standard model as it does over twice the limit and corners like its on rails.

just my 2p

Change it absolutely to match your new requirements... Yes definitely change it ... For a Falco lol:biggrin

I had a 2000 ' R ' model. The suspension was setup to be ' firm on the soft side ' , definitely not hard and uncomfortable. My favorite roads are back roads with plenty of bumps that need to be soaked up. When having to decide on two previously ' loved ' rsv's and the one is an ' R ' , it all boils down to condition and price difference. I would . rather buy a ' mint ' Mille than a scruffy ' R ' ( a mint ' R ' being 1st prize )

The seat itself I found surprisingly comfortable and easy to move your weight around on having to change direction quickly. The RSV does work your wrists in slow traffic due to uncompromising ride position. ( then again I did not buy it for its commuter value and at 47 my body is getting to old for this sh*t. The mind and body went out-of-sync long time ago )

Where OZ rims or no OZ rims are concerned. There are all types of physics playing out on lighter rims......inertia...gyroscopic force....not to mention improving overall power / weight ratio. It does make a difference and the faster you ride, the more it shows. I have a good article on the subject.....will try and find and post.

Look further than the Hp figures of the RSV and compare a V990's torque with newer bikes. Why does the opposition never mention torque......you don't highlight areas where you don't shine . Look at the new yamaha R1...more torque.no gain in hp..even sounds like a twin and much better on track than older screamer versions. For 2012 all superbike brands have worked on ' ride-ability, ' taming the horses through traction-control, improving mid-range torque.

Loner has a very valid point on brake pads...you can fuuk very good Brembos with un-matched pads.

Don't wuote me on any of this, but unlike Ducati and their R bikes, Aprilia don't do anything to the engines, just some carbon, the Ohlins kit, etc....
From what i've heard about the Ohlins stuff it that the standard forks and shock can be better on the road, as the Ohlins is deigned for smooth track use and not un-even, sunken man-hole cover, winter crack ridden roads.
As I said, don't quote me on any of that, but if i'm right, i'd stick with your sorted Mille as all you'll be getting really with an R is the bling factor

I've heard exactly the same as above and from my own experience the sachs and showa landing gear appears to be alot more bomb proof than the swedish kit and requires far less baby sitting.

Cheers for all your info I think mebe I will stick with my standard mille this year and see how it pans out ...............I have also heard the ohlins fork seals can be a bit more temperamental than the showa items...

id completely agree with all that, I own a 2000 mille and i love it, and like someone said on here unless ur gunna ride it to its limit ur not going to notice the difference... except in insurance, my mille is grp 14 and a 'r' is 17, save urself some money and buy a mint mille and buy some trick bits :))

Totally agree with that bud I am not really gonna be ridin to limits 90% of the time and want to take it on some kinda touring runs with luggage kit on.........and I have already some trick bits installed (not carbon though as can't see the point unless I was on a race track) I think I shall be keeping this ape for this year and see how it fairs as I have also yet to see another in the same colour scheme as mine apart from Red Milles that is which is the most similar
