What van?

I'm looking to get a van, just want some advice on what to get. I don't need anything large, just big enough to take a dirt bike and/or track bike, as economical as possible and obviously reliable. Transit is too big, VW too expensive, want to spend upto £1500. What should I get?

Dispatch / Expert / Scudo

They're all the same in effect. I had one when I was racing supermoto and it was big enough for the SXV and all the gubbins that went with a weekends racing.

Paid £750 for my W reg Dispatch mine with 180k on the clock and loads of history a few years ago. 2 years later I sold it for £1150 having put tyres on it and put it through an MOT. Should never have sold it 'cos I'm now looking for another one to use for trackdays!

Plenty about within your budget. 1.9 n/a diesel is slow but reliable, 2.0 HDi quicker but has turbo that can obviously go wrong. I had the 1.9 and will have another soon ;-)

I was thinking of the Toyota HiAce, they have a bit more room so I can chuck a mattress in the back for going away at weekends and they have a really good write up.

The Hi-Ace seems to start at around £1000 on Autotrader. See a few of them around here with decorators and such like in.

I've had a couple of hi-ace's and they are FANTASTICALLY reliable but unfortunately very thirsty (28/9mpg) I've always avoided transit's but didn't have any choice last year when I needed a van quickly and haven't regretted it as it's bloody brilliant. Quick and easy to drive, easy to service with fairly cheap parts, very reliable (touch wood) and cheaper to buy than most of the other vans. If the size of a hi-ace is ok then surely the size of a mwb transit is ok too?? I'd now buy another tomorrow

I thought about a Transit but was warned off as anything built after 2001 has a water pump problem and they cost £1300 to fix!! All the ones i've looked at pre 2001 have been sheds used by builders, I hate to say it but the Japs do make the most reliable vans.

the transit is the best of a bad bunch flywheels and clutches there all ***** just dont buy a renault trafic/master even low mileage ones **** up even your merc vito`s and sprinters are **** gearbox problems jumping out of 1st and 2nd gears and flywheels and clutch problems and rust like ****
we have citroen dispatch works van 2ltr turbo diesel 6sp gearbox great van its been done loads of miles and get a good thrashing most of the time . but for 1500 quid you wont get much why not buy a towavan instead ?

Transit tdi's have problems with the injectors, same as the Mondeo, you can't swop parts so it's a grand to repair. Told this by a mate who's got his own garage and paid this out for his own transit. When I took my car for an MOT, I asked the garage owner if he'd heard of the problem, he said, he try's to avoid Mondeo's if someone rings to say they've a problem with excesive smoke.
So, maybe something to bear in mind.

I picked up a 52 reg Expert a couple of weeks ago via e-bay.

80k miles from new with service history. 12 months MOT, 6 months tax. It's the 1.9 n/a one so not the quickest thing on the road but it is cheap to run and should be reliable.

£1400 and it even has air conditioning!
