A very interesting post as i'm looking to swap the other way! I currently ride a 1290R after getting shot of the diavel carbon red and for those who asked what they ride like as standard all i will say is nice in a straight line unless it's bumpy and in corners awful unless you spend ££££'s on the ohlins rear shock like i did and then i got MCT to set the whole lot up, much better after but still no super bike and engine is as lumpy as a toads back at low revs. I've test ridden the 2014 V4 and loved it apart from the seat and horrendous MPG so i was looking to order the new 1100 factory but i've heard it drinks fuel like it's going out of fashion and dealer back up is woeful, so probably look to keep the KTM until you get reviews of the new V4 model. Yesterday though i took out an MV Brutale 800 RR. Surprised me with how nimble and quick it was, not as fast as the 1290 grunt but very respectable. A few quibbles being the suspension was set as factory settings and was so hard it spoilt it on b roads and the throttle was set so sensitive it see sawed when combined with the suspension set up but they can both be changed and could or would make a seriously quick bike that looks gorgeous and with a dealer 6 miles away it could be an option when i sell the 1290. I've tested the S1000r sport, too bland and too many problems, the z1000 is woeful, monster 1200 is ok but too fat and lardy and i didn't like the speed or street triple at all, just didn't gel with them, so for me it's a question of keep the 1290, MV Brutale or even the mad Dragster is growing on me or the 1100 factory but thats way too expensive unless you can get an ex demo. The 1290 will take some beating i think. So comfortable to ride, 2 hours in the saddle and no pains, great wind protection for a naked i get no blast until about 120 (private road), great handling and mpg, it's also fuelled nearly perfect and will tour, commute or thrash with ease and turn the electrics off and it's as mad as a box of frogs so it's replacement has some high grades to live up to.
