Hi Guy's again...

I've noticed that on my 04 T, that when i wash it or i leave it out in the rain when I'm stopped off somewhere, that water get's into the filler cap and sits on the outer rubber rim around the fuel hole.

And it get's into the fuel tank, and also the water get's somewhere else, so when i try and start the bike it won't start because of it.

Is there anything that can be done to solve this?

At the minute I'm just stuffing loads of kitchen roll in there to soak up any water.

I did think it might be a blockage in the breather pipe somewhere, but if that was the case the bike wouldn't run when its dry.

Cheers
Rob

you should have a drain hole on the ouside of the actual filler hole.

Check that the rubber hose that drains the recess isn't kinked from when you/mechanic last lifted the tank.....it will be going from the tank though the engine space and down though the guts and pop out near gearbox/rear wheel.

just had same issue with my gen2.worked out to be a blockage in the drain pipe running from filler to bottom of tank. fix was to lift tank, work out which pipe, disconnect rubber drain pipe and run some light gauge wire up thru to filler.as you push the wire gently turn it back and forth to allow wire to travel thru pipe.also blow thru lower waste pipe to ensure its clear.hope this helps

Found out yesterday the breather pipe isn't blocked, just slow flowing, as i had the tank propped up yesterday. Then found a puddle of fuel under the bike.

unscrew the nipple that connects to the drain pipe on the underside of the tank.
even though it's letting water pass, it's highly likely to be furred up inside and restricting the flow.
run a small drill through it, to remove all the furred up corrosion

Check on an old post from Felix.

He put a fix on here to seal the filler cap onto the tank using some sheet plastic (or a lid from a chinese take away)

Is this linked to your other post, perhaps its water causing the starting issues ?

I'll Have a look for that Olaf, it's possibly linked yeah, but the filler issue is with water getting into it, and when i was out it wasn't raining.

I was thinking about your initial info where you said that water was getting into the tank as well.
Could be getting into the fuel system as water will always be under the petrol in your tank & if there is enough, getting into the fuel tap.

On small aeroplanes, they have to take a fuel tank sample before every flight in case water has got in.
Sometimes there was that much water in the tanks, it looked like a good sample of fuel but was actually totally water.

Issue i had (and copied a link too) was that fuel was leaking out of the cap when riding due to the seal on the filler cap not doing its job. Fix was to place a piece of plastic between the cap and the seal so that when it was closed it gave a tighter fit so fuel could not escape.

Typical aprilia, i noticed the last time i washed it that water is not draining away as it should from the filler cap recess... great - another thing to look at then when my hand is mended.

:)

Cheers Felix,
My mistake, I tought it was about water getting in,

But then again, maybe if fuel can get out, water can get in.

Will be doing the plastic in-fill mod later tonight then. Will see if i can retrieve the breather pipe as well and see where it goes and try and clean it out a bit.

Did the plastic ring mod last night. But had to put 2 rings in to make the rubber sit tighter than before. But that's that done, the breather pipe is pretty much all clear. Suppose I'll just have to put something over the filler cap next time i wash it or i get caught out in the rain.
