I think its 12k on the older shape bikes, not sure on the newer model,it's not much to do,Im doing mine every other year regardless of mileage

ive got the first one being 9,000 miles or every 2 years, thats by the book that is,,, hoping to get mine checked soon and see when griff could be up in geordie land:thumbup

Can anyone please tell me what the clearances are supposed to be? Ta!

Every 9k miles on the early shape. Sorry but I dont have the tollerences to hand.

I just found the clearances form another forum - Inlet 0.11 - 0.18mm; Exh 0.22 - 0.29mm - verified form a few different sources too. And HIGHLY recommended to get new valve seals as the old can be re-used but are very prone to leaking.

Ta for the help, chaps.

I've been told by many mechanics and I tend to agree...If it runs well and sounds well....leave well alone.
Obviously if it's a track bike that's a little different

be careful ..they get quieter as they close up ..thats the problem..people think cos its quiet its ok..not like tappetts on a car when they open and its gets noisy

Ima get them checked, just to be sure. ;) Its in for a service anyways..... ONly difference between checking and not is the cost! Mind, cheaper to check / adjust than to get valve / piston meetings..... ;)

I'm not convinced it would get to that stage to be honest. I had a gixer and the timing jumped 2 teeth and there was no damage caused just wouldn't start.
I'm no bike mechanic but I reckon you could do 30000+ miles fast road riding and they'd still be peachy

Well, that's about 130,000 road miles for me, as I don't ride fast!!! :blush

As I say, wiz, tis just my peace of mind, mate. ;)

I just done mine, 8.5 k & two of the exhaust valves were below minimum tolerance. As said, now they are all within tolerance the engine sounds rattlier. Here's a tip, don't try & prime your hydraulic tensioners, I did & depressed the ball bearing to far & it wouldn't seat again. That was £50.00 down the drain.

Oh knickers! Well, TBH, I'm not entirely sure which end of a spanner one applies to a nut / bolt, so tis in getting done. Soooo, any "misdemeanour" will be paid for / sorted by the garage. And he's a mate, so he won't stiff me. :) If he does, I'll pee on his door handle.....

Bikers world told me it would be £100.00 to do the valve clearances, wish I'd got them to do it now, what a pain in the arse job, but now I've done it once I suppose the next time will be easier.

I was quoted £500 - £550 from Bikers in southampton for a major, all fluids drained refilled, front forts serviced, valve clearences done.

Seems a little steep to me

Just had mine checked on 05 RSV, due at 12k miles. As somebody said, they only get tighter so don't leave them thinking its nice & quiet with no rattles. I would prefer to hear a tappet than a burnt valve seat any day! Find out when AP are visiting yeur area next & get them to check if you aren't confident doing it.
