Hey all, I'm a newbie here having just purchased my 2007 Tuono a few weeks ago. I've been wanting one for a couple of years and finally took the plunge. My question is bout the valve adjustment interval. In my manual it looks like they recommend one at the initial service (625 miles) and every 6250 miles thereafter. I even downloaded the PDF from the Aprilia site and it says the same thing. The dealership here says no, you don't adjust the valves until every 12,500 miles. Am I reading my manual wrong, is this a mis-print or what? I really believe in doing the factory recommended maintenance schedule, but their recommendation does seem excessive, especially since the Tuono uses shim under bucket valve adjustment. My Yamaha doesn't recommend a valve adjustment until 26,000 miles and my Harley V-rod doesn't recommend until 12,000 miles. What are you guy's doing?

HI B911 and welcome

The manual says valve adjustment should be adjusted every 10 000km (6250 miles) or 12 months - whichever comes first. I go by the manual, especially while my warranty is still valid.

I agree with you on what it says in the manual (It also calls for a valve adjustment at the initial 625 mile service) but, this seems really excessive. In addition, my dealer (Who will be honoring my warranty) says that, according to the Aprilia site, the actual valve adjustment interval is 12,500 miles and no adjustment is called for at the initial service. I just wanted some input from some of the people who have been riding tuono's for a little longer about their experiences.

Also, I've noticed that I get very few responses from anyone on this board. Is this a newbie thing or am I missing something? I know the other bike specific boards I belong to have a wealth of information and people willing to share. That doesn't seem to be the case here but, then again, maybe that's just me. hmmmmm

Hi biker 911, I'm sure it can't be you but I have noticed you have a "Hardly Movingson" amongst your transport so that could be the problem!

My T has only around 5000km up to date, which is not adequate to confirm whether valve adjustments are required at every service interval or not. My post was merely to create awareness of the fact that Aprilia requires the bike to be serviced at specific intervals as a condition of their warranty, and that valve check/adjustment is listed as part of the 10000km/12month service. Once I start doing my own servicing, I will have a better idea about the valve adjustment requirements etc.

Notwithstanding this, I have read on the AF1 forum that the RSV Rotax is very stable as far as valve adjustment is concerned, and seldom requires actual adjustment.

Don't miss out the first valve check at 625 miles, its done for a reason :thumbup

My "Hardly Ableson" is a V-rod, the Street Rod model with upside down forks and around 128 horsepower. It was only built for a couple of years. It's a screamer with power close to our Tuono's. "Hardly Movingson"? I don't think so.

G,day 911,
I don't want to get into the "Can hardly" thing, but can it corner and stop like a tuono? :dunno

Absolutely not but, can our Tuono corner and stop like a Moto GP bike? I think not. Does that make it somehow less of a great bike? No. For me, My Tuono fits me really well as does my Harley and my Yamaha. I just don't believe in putting down other peoples bikes just because it doesn't do one or two things as well as a Tuono. We're all bike riders here, most who also own a Tuono.

Hey 911, don't take the comments too seriously - it's only light banter.:roost

Oh don't worry, I really don't. I wish someone would be as ready to supply some relevent information to my question though. Doesn't seem to be nearly as much interest in that.

G,Day 911,
As to your Q."Valve adustment 1st service". The 2000 ZXR750 I had, the 1st time I checked at 1000km. They DID require reshimming. At 5000km, not as much required, 10,000km, again only a minor adjustment. After this 10k each valve check was done every 10,000km at same time oil changed etc.The wear also varies as HOW HARD YOU REV the engine. Rev limiter gear changes = bedding of the valve into the valveseat. Thus reshimming, or try using a honing stone to take the required thou.(s) needed to get the required clearance.I always ground the same surface.THE SIDE TOUCHING VALVE NOT THE CAM FOLLOWER. After 30,000km the amount of adjustment was very little. The kwaka was ridden hard at least 3 days a week (high revs & kph).Plus track days once a month.:thumbup
Sorry for my dig at harleys. Here in Tassie they are only a mobile chichane :crazy to negotiate on our winding mountainous roads we are lucky to have here!:lol Enjoy your Tuono and Don't beleive everything your dealer tells you when things SHOULD be checked & they say NO. Most say this so they can get more quick services done to make a faster $. :crazy

No offense taken. In fact I would agree with you on the air cooled varieties. I had a 1996 1200 Sportster and ended up getting rid of it since it just didn't have the stones to keep me interested. The dealer here did print out the recommended maintenance schedule from the Aprilia Post Sales dealer site. On that one, it doesn't call for the first valve adjustment until 12,500 miles. You are correct about the fact that it depends on how you ride it. I'm old (52) and don't scream around much anymore. I've got the sheet he gave me and I'll post it as soon as I can figure out how to upload it. I do trust this dealer as I have known him for about 20 years and this is my second bike from his shop. The top of the sheet says Piaggio & Co SpA - Brand Aprilia - After Sales Website USA (en) across the top. I was just curious since I've heard such great things about our 990 Rotax motors. Even the Ducati's will now go 7500 miles between valve adjustments. Thank you for the info.

Hello Biker, when I got the big T it had 1400 miles on the clock and no way of knowing if it had its first service. Asked the dealer who sold it new and they had no record of it. So I did it myself and for sure I checked the valve clearance, they were all within spec. Because if any valves are too tight it can burn if too loose may make noise, upset timing, cause undue wear and so on. I say when in doubt check it out yours may not need adjusting but do get them checked. First 625-1000 then every 12000.

And welcome to the land of Aahhhs, have fun and be safe.

I'll probably go with my dealer specifications. They are an approved Aprilia dealership and they are the ones honoring my warranty. It's curious to me the differences between dealerships that I am seeing. I have no doubt what you guy's are hearing but, I wonder why my dealer would tell me differently (And falsify information he said was downloaded from the Aprilia dealership website) for something that will bring him less money in the long run. Just wondering, has anyone EVER had a Tuono that actually required a valve adjustment at the 625 mile service (Not just a check, but the valves were actually out of spec)? How about at the 6250 mile service?

Honestly, I never figured this to be a big issue. Go figure.

The Aprilia dealer in my area I wouldn't have change the air in my tires. They're main business is with japanese bikes, It's a trust thing ya know. Your lucky to have a dealer you can trust that has good Aprilia tech to work on your bike. If that were my case I would also do as they suggest. I know two vary good Aprilia mechanics but they are sixty some miles from where I live.

Type (Falco valve adjustment) in your browser and check out how to do your own. Vary well done article. He also walks you through synchroizing the throttle body.

Not that big of a deal. I mean you could be trying to deal with a four valve per cyl. desmo.

And the smile on your face every time you ride the machine is well worth the cost of service.

Yep, I'm pretty fortunate. The dealer in Tallahassee (Florida Motorsports) is a european only dealership that caters to Aprilia, Ducati, Triumph and KTM. In addition, the mechanic that works on my Aprilia is actually european himself from Italy. Great guy and a really hard worker. Seems to know a ton about Italian bikes in general.

Here in the states, I am consistently hearing every 6000 miles. Not sure what KM's that would equate too. The valve check is done at 625. After that, it is every 6000 miles or 1 year. I only have 3000 on the clock now, so I have dodged that bullet for a little longer.
