Tyres (again)

Hi peeps,

I'm an RSV '04 newby looking to fit Dunlop Quali's for real road riding (when I get out there, it's bound to rain...). So, the Q2's have had great write-ups and I'm all set to type in my card details when I see that I can save £50 by buying the original Qualifier (Q1?).

OK, it's "only" £50, and the Q2's sound awesome, but I only intend to use them for road riding, and I err on the side of caution these days, and so expect that the original Quali's would be just fine. Unless you know better :confused . Is there anything I should know?

Hi m8 i was alway told to check the date stamp on a tyre for when it was manufactured because tyres have a specific shelf life but don't ask me how long i think it could be three years but i'm no expert ,how much were you gettin the q2s for if you don't mind me asking?????

Hi Bryan, Demon Tweeks do the Q2's for £227 next day delivery, but I could have the Qualifier (original) for £172. The difference buys me a front stand, and as I am not likely to ride to the limits of any tyre on the road (I believe those days are behind me...) then that sounds like a plan :) Plus, the Dunlops will go on my spare rims (lucky me) and so I'll have the current Supercorsas for totally dry riding (or the track day that may not happen now). I've ridden her 3 times only, and the Pirelli's are great, but I just don't fancy them if it gets wet - I'm old school and like to see more tread and less slick if it's gonna be wet :nervous

Hi m8 ,you could have a set of metzeler sprotec m5s for £189 from crossan motorcycles through fleabay and they are meant to be better than the q2s,i have the m3s at the mo and the wet grip is brilliant plus the feedback is superb you always feel the tyre going and have plenty time to react but hey opinions on tyres are like arses everyones got one, just thought id add my tupence in and give you another opinion .....

know what you're saying. I've been guided by the VisorDown test done by Jamie Witham - he knows a thing or two. The winter tyre test came out with the Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart as best, and the later test on real road riding tyres (but a track test non-the-less) came out with him choosing the Dunlop Q2's. I figure I can't argue with the Wit, so am willing to give them a try. The Metz-Bridgelins all sound good, but may be a bit more performance oriented at the expense of wet riding confidence. That said, you say the M3's are brill in the wet.

Ho-hum, need to get them on order tomorrow, decisions, decisions, Dave

ps am I forever tagged as Baby Twin, or can I edit that part of my profile?

You just need to get to a hundred posts m8 and then youll be EEEvilll like me lol

£172 aint cheap....you then have fitting to pay for...They are a good tyre but thats too expensive.
Roadsmart..great allround tyre but rsv deserves better in the dry.
Q2's ....good tyre but not in my favourites list...just doesn't have enough feel.
Metzeler M3's...old but really suit the RSV chassis.

Unless tyres are dirt cheap online i wouldn't buy them at all....your local tyre specialist should be able to beat the prices easily.
Locally I can have the pick of all but the absolute latest tyres for £200 fitted to the bike or save £10 if I just take the rims in.

I also have the option of a having them fitted at home by a mobile tyre guy for about the same money.

Bottom line...shop around and avoid the net unless so cheap its robbery.

Genman, clearly I'm in the wrong town, as usually the interweb comes up trumps on price??? Whereabouts to you shop? Normally I'd fit them myself, but I have a trip planned and time is limited. You say "rsv deserves better in the dry" but I'm taking off the Pirelli SuperCorsas cause they're great dry tyres that I have little trust in if it comes wet on that trip. The bikes brill, but I'm sure that I can ride at a level I'm comfortable with and still be well within the limits of most tyres; would I notice the difference? Would I really feel that the Roadsmart leaves something to be desired, or that the Q2 doesn't have enough feel?

M3's certainly get a lot of RSV votes,

Thanks, Dave

Get what ever you prefer, you've got super corsa's for fast riding anyway. I've got sportmax roadsmart on, original fitment and i've never had aproblem with them. Unless your riding like you stole the ****** you will be fine. Probably guarentee plod on their blackbird would keep up with you fastest riding and they have road tyres not super corsas or racetecs.

I have the avon vp2 on mine and are great in dry and wet conditions, was expensive though paid 200 pound fitted put them on last year and still going strong!! More hard wearing in the centers and softer on the edges had the 2ct roads on before and i rate the avon ones better.

Ok...wet weather considerations then...Roadsmart or Pilot Road 2's...still keep a sporty feel but superb wet grip...new Pilot Road 3's are better still and look crazy.
If lean angle etc isn't big on your plans then Metzeler Z8 or Pirelli Angels.................price wise they vary from £200-260 fitted but should last 5000 + miles easily.
Avon have never really made a bad touring tyre and can be good value.

Of that lot my vote would be the Roadsmarts....only ever noticed the limits with them on a track.

Found a useful graphic on the Dunlop.eu site which explains the market sectors for each tyre, then spoke to Griff, the nett result of which is that I shall get the Sportsmart fitted and ride happily ever after (as long as the battery will give me enough starts to get to Tamworth...). Thanks everyone.
