tyre pressure loss

hi guys
has anyone experienced sudden front tyre pressure loss. I set off for work this morning as normal, got off the slip road of the dual carriage way, accelerated to about 95-100 mph, slowed to a steady 80 or so for a couple of miles, slowed again for the up coming roundabout and one flat front tyre.
This happened a couple of weeks ago but on a different stretch of road, I pumped up the tyre left it over night to see if it was a slow puncture, looked again in the morning and it was fine. I can't explain it, the only thing I've noticed is a slight vibration at about 90 mph but surely this couldn't deflate the tyre?

help needed ...
p.s. it seems fine tootling around town doing 30 to 50 mph as has been the case for the last couple of weeks!!!

this happened to me a few weeks ago now, i too inflated it and left it over night to check for a slow and it was fine in the morning. i havnt noticed any vibration though. i havnt been for a fast blast since, just comuting to work and back and been fine ever since

Colud be a hole in the tyre and it only lets air out when the rubber warms up and the steel takes the strain on the carcass......

Check your valve, it could be loose. The pin on my valve snapped on my VFR after the winter lay up. My MV valve also became problematic.

If you're struggling getting to the bottom of the problem mate, remove the whole wheel and put it in a half full bath. I have had an instance before where i had a marchesini which mysteriously let air out and it turned out there was a hairline crack at the base of a spoke ... not sure how you would do this if it only happens when up to speed etc ... but just an idea (unless you have any big puddles around haha)

I had this happen at the end of a top speed run at Bruntingthorpe proving ground, it made stopping a bit interesting.

In my case it was the valve and I managed a temporary fix by fitting a sealed valve cap (steel one with an o-ring)

after reading your post again mate and the seeming relation between loss of pressure and travelling @ speed i would also recommend looking at the valve. sounds like the centrifugal force is causing the valve to fail. dont ride fast (or at all) til its sorted mate, a quick deflating front (or rear) could be disasterous ! good luck

Had similar problem with a fireblade front tyre went down at 175+! It made it fun trying to get round the roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway!! The problem was that the valve center had lifted at speed due to centerfugal force! fitted a metal one with a seal and it never happened again

Hi bud,

I had this problem a couple of years back on a Europe trip, and thinking I had a puncture in the front went and bought some new tyres, just to have the same thing happen about 100km down the road.

Turns out the plastic valve caps do not seal properly and at high speed the pressure builds up under the valve cap and lets all the air out for you. I fixed this with a proper metal cap with a rubber seal in which worked. But I've now had the whole valve changed to a right angle as I just couldn't trust the straight one.

I've done loads of miles and track days since and had no problems.

My local dealer charged me about £10 for the new valve and fitting (I removed the front wheel).

Hope that helps

carloz i was thinking about right angled ones, they would make tyre pressures a whole lot easier and as you say the orientation of the valve will stop it failing ... fortunately i already have alloy ones i got from halfrauds for about £1.50 ...
