My mate has an FJ 1200 with side car and similar front end. May have something to do with the extra weight , braking etc
 
That's an Earles, Leading-Link front suspension. It's used on sidecars primarily because of the additional side loading the front suspension get's since sidecars don't lean. It was used on several two wheel dirt bikes in the late 60's and early 70's (Sachs, Greeves) with some success. It pretty much fell out of favor with the advent of long-travel suspension in the mid to late 70's
