Torque talk

Fook knows
Chaps, a bit of a heads up on the wheel torque settings.

I got some new tyres yesterday and on fitting the front wheel I spotted a crack on the fork bottom, right over the pinch bolts. Their has only ever been myself who's taken the front wheel off this bike and I've torqued it correctly every time when I've put it back on. Honest guvner. I don't profess to be the best spannerer in the world but I know the basics and I've had 5 Prillas over about 11-12 years now so know a little bit about em.

This is it,

I haven't got a clue how long it's been like that but judging by the size of it and the fact their is a fair bit of crud in there I reckon it's been like that a good while. Just waiting to give up big time and hurt me proper.
I spotted it last night and today I've been running around like a blue arse fly trying to get it mended somehow, but no chance. 3 weeks before Kais can get the part, £150 + vat + labour, and they are official Ohlins chaps. Rocket Centre had nothing and are filing a warranty claim on my behalf.
Tomorrow I was supposed to be going on it up to Jockoland spending the weekend with the Fudmeister and Rico on the Sat, but I managed to get the Fuono mot/tax/insured today and I'm going on that.
Like I say, I always torque me wheels, so the moral of this story is check the forks regularly especially if you have Ohlins. This is a pretty common thing apparently and usually blamed on over tightening the pinch bolts, but on this occasion not so.

One of the lads I spoke to today said it happened a lot a while ago because Ohlins never informed anyone of the change in torque settings from non to radial calipers, but I don't know really, the info's been out there for a good while. I got it when I had the Rsvr.
Anyroad I'm pissed off.

Torque settings on Ohlins shocked front wheel spindle nut with radial calipers = 80nm, rear wheel = 120nm and the front pinch bolts are 12nm. If I'm a dick and did get it wrong someone please correct me.

I can't find a good one for the newer bikes, sorry boys, but someone should find it and sticky, hahahahahhhahhhahahaha, it.

Hoorah to the mighty Foono.

oops.

hope yer get it sorted pal.

good spot though, could have been a nasty one that.

A long and painfull battle with Piaggio is ensuing one fears.

Lucky lad, could have been proper nasty that, i'm off the check mine now!!

Have you tried MC Technics they always used to be good and helpfull?

It was all about time mate, what with spotting it on Wednesday night and wanting to be away Friday dinner. Hope the Fuono don't blow up ;-[

that just sent me to the shed to check as iv just fitted new rubber,
all is well so ill b keeping an eye on that........
hope you get sorted soon nob, njoy ur w,end on the fuono...........

Just as well you have the Fuono for the weekend min ...

Or it would have been all torque and no action!

Scary stuff! I have a torque wrench that I use but it's over 25 years old so the calibration is probably way off.

Given that my preferred way of tightening bolts is as tight as I can possibly can, then a little bit more, that's a salutary lesson. Ta.

Ive heard about this happening to the Ohlins forks , sorry it happened to yours though Nob !

I remember Griff warning me about this when he replaced my fork seals. Its a commomn problem apparently. Pinch bolts don't need to be too tight.

Righty ho chaps, just about to set off. Happy to report that Aprilia have accepted my warranty claim and the work should be done soon :thumbup
