To break or not to break? That is the question.

I am retiring from 2 wheels, but decided to go out with 4 days on track at Portimao on a 2001 RSV Mille R I purchased for this purpose. The bike was great fun and performed very well. It did get noisy towards the end (but I thought that this was the clutch). I took it into my local garage for a service prior to selling it. Unfortunately they called me to say that the noise was from the top end of the engine and they had found bits of metal on the sump plug (so advised me that they didn't want to waste my money so weren't going to do any more work). I consider that the bike is worth £2000 but am unsure how much it is going to cost to get this problem fixed. It could just be a tensioner, but I don't know and am certainly not capable of doing anything mechanical myself. The bike is in great order with a year's MOT and obviously all the trick bits on it. Unfortunately I think that the best course of action for me is to break the bike and sell the bits on ebay as this will be more cost effective, unless I there is someone who will pay decent money as it is?

If its got trick bits then I fear apart from your time as a cost you may be right in that breaking it may gain more cash bit it depends on what those bits are and how much you can be bothered. If someone gives you a decent price it may well not be what you want but may save you enough time and hassle to make it worth it.
Ohlins shock forks and oz wheels would get you a decent price and may be just worth selling those the panels and binning the rest?

Oz wheels 550,ohlins forks,500,ohlins shock 250 ohlins steering damper 130, etc etc

I would think you would be very lucky to get those prices, I have broke a few bikes over the years however last this couple of years I have seen prices plumet so much so I have started putting bikes back on the road rather than break them.

Front OZ maybe £250, rear you would practically need to give it away.
Front Ohlins with yokes maybe £450
Ohlins shock 200 -250

Ok so you think thats not bad I would have nearly a grand there and loads of other bits to sell, believe me you will have all those other bits for a very long time

Just 2 give you a realistic idea what stuff is selling for on Ebay here is a brief list of what I have purchased in the last 12 months

wiring loom 99p
ecu 99p
left clip on 99p
frame with log book no damage not on any register with history £44
rear OZ £80
Brembo 4 pad type caliper £35

If you advertise on here and other forums you might get top price, personally I would sell it as is requiring an engine or rebuild. I picked an engine up about 4 years ago for around £60 still in one of my track bikes and still going strong

looks like you watch ebay for the bargains of course stuff will always sell cheap if no ones chasing at the time.

but ebay isnt always the place to sell as you have proved.

oz wheels.. think your view is a little clouded ...everyone wants them

There is a pair of OZ wheels for sale on aprilia.me for £350 and have been for sale for a month. not everyone wants a set.
I can only go from experiance everytime I have tried so sell a pair I always get offers for the front only.

The ones on aprilia.me are gen 2 ones. They have been machined to fit axial brakes, this will put a lot of people off, I know it would me. Genuine ones that have not been messed with ie not machined or powder coated fetch good money. Up until I had bought my new RSVR I was happy to pay up to £600 for the right set in perfect nick.

Ohlins forks I would pay up to £500, more if they came with the triple clamp, more again if there were radials.

Ohlins shock I would say around £250.

I just got £55 for the carbon inserts of the side fairings alone, complete with good unmarked fairings you are looking at £60-£80 a panel.

Again I just sold a 2001/02 seat hump for £82 which seems about right at the moment. It was in perfect condition.

Fuels tanks fetch around £80-£100 if they are unmarked and have no leaks. Fuel pump around £40-£50 easily.

There is money there, it is all about choosing where and when to sell ;)

he means tinmans ones not sparkeys

"Original buyer never showed and hasn't returned msg's since so back up for sale."

they've sold once and tinman has asked for collection again puts people off

people always want a front ..first thing damaged if they hit anything i've been left with rears a few times

hope tinman sells them as i really dont want to buy them ha ha

Yeah just checked the listing Mark. People will also be put off because they are not standard having been powder coated.

Gotta offer delivery and leave standard for things to sell ;)

The point I am trying to make is these bikes are old hat and few people are willing to pay decent money for parts. I have brought a rsvr in tidy condtion for £1800, would I pay 500 for ohlins forks and 600 for wheels? No I wouldn't.
I thought with the likes of thundersport running the classic superbikes the price might rise but after looking at some of the milles racing in that series they are running brembo and showa. (cheaper to replace when damaged)
The prices I quoted are realistic, the other price are probably what they are worth and if you are prepared to wait for someone prepared to pay those prices you'll do ok breaking.
Me personally I would sooner have £1500 now rather than £2000 spread over 2 or 3 years.

Also this fella has got one post, I don't know him and certainly would not send £600 through paypal to a stranger, so I would only be willing to do cash on collection.

Thats my opinion others may differ

I know what you mean hanging on for the last pound note will take ages
..as for the race series i had a chat with a few guys who race and it is certainly the guys with the money winning rather like most race series

The oz's on aprilia.me finally sold he probably had them at a fair price as they needed powder coating bearings and new cush drive rubbers

I totally agree with you Nick. I'd realistically take £1500 for it as it stands. It would be a great bike for the right person, as the cost of parts to repair shouldn't be that much.

I had to get rid of a falco I killed and couldn't be bothered having it in the garage semi decomposing for little gain so did it in one go
