Hi guys, I just sold my bike and have decided to buy something cheaper. I had £10k+ tied up in my last bike and I just didn't ride it enough to justify keeping it. I work over 50 hours a week so have decided to spend between £2,500-£4,500 and want to get a V-Twin. I want to buy a really nice bike and I know I should ride one to decide but I don't have time so will just buy a good one from a forum member to make sure it is good.

I am not a fast rider just want a nice bike to keep and go out for a ride every now and then on my own. I might ride about 500 miles a year. I will not be riding it on the track. Just a ride for an hour or two. I am 6 ft and 18 stone as well. Like a rugby player.

TL1000R - Bullet proof. Cheap to maintain, sounds great with yoshis, looks great to me and you can get a good one for £2,500.

RSVR 04+ I like the newer model with the twin headlights. A bit newer tech than a TLR, more agile and modern looking. Already comes with Ohlins and lighter wheels. They aren't without their issues though I hear. Good ones are around £4-5000 ish.

Ducati 999S. Looks amazing to me. Looks more exotic. Might feel too small compared to the others? I am worried about the costs of the upkeep. I know belts are around £800 to replace every 2 years. If I only ride a 500 miles a year that sort of costs every 1000 miles might take the shine of it.

I am sure some of you have had the above bikes so would be keen to hear from you.

Thanks!

You're likely to only find out about ownership of Aprilias on this forum. The likelyhood of anyone owning two or more of these is quite slim. You'd get more luck finding about each bike from the bike-specific forums.

TL1000R, wouldn't touch one, don't like them at all, sorry.
I had the same choice to make between the 999 and the RSV.
But I had more budget than you (up to 6K) and just couldn't find a nice 999 for that.
Down around the budget you have, the 999s available must be very early models, or very nasty.
I wanted 05 onwards, as the frame was changed for the better at that point.
The RSV was the best compromise between age/price/spec.

I had a 03 tlr before my 04 factory, and its a bigger bike thats better for taller riders, Mine was way faster than my factory, but has mad amounts of weight over the front end. Definitely not a flickable bike. The rsv feels as light as some of the dirtbikes Ive owned, but is finicky as all hell. So, do you like reliable ladies, even though they are a little more portly, or do you like fast, sexy, skinny ladies that demand your attention at times? I like high maintenance, exotic, temperamental ladies myself.... But with some easy mods, my tlr was stupid fast.

999s - small, expensive, more spend on service. probably best ducati ever but needs to fit to your eye
tlr - ugly, old, japan, cheap
rsv - nice, cheap, good stuff for low money. lot of spares, cheap ones too.

i would go for rsv with ohlins and OZ wheels

Plus the rear shock setup on a tlr is flat out junk, but theres a couple different jap bike shocks you can fit with some work, or a penske set up if you can still find em. really solid bike though.

New member, G'Day to all. I have a TLR, a SP1 and tomorrow a 2008 RSVR. Ill let you know when I ride the Aprilia. Never sat on one.

So, Very nice bike only 6000kms from new. Its been sat idle for the last 4 to 5 years. I've just ran it and got it temp and dropped the fluids out of it. Ordered a filter öil" Which proved to be wrong, got the correct filter along with iridium plugs and a K&N air filter. All back together and back up to temp I've noticed a few drops of oil and water around the hoses. The oil and water were both low when I originally dropped them. Anyone know if this is common on these bikes ( factory hose clamp's, or hoses to leak) if sat doing nothing for years? Oh and its a joy to ride. Its still got original tyres on it. It'll be a lot better with fresh rubber and correct gearing. the thing does a thousand in first! I like it.

The water hoses/clamps seem to be a weak point, my 4000 mile (2008) bike was leaking coolant onto the garage floor.
Now fixed with some SAMCO hoses and jubilee clips.
Not had any oil leaks on mine.

tlr , stompin motor , big heavy wobbly chassis , look good only in blue white , and its a Suzuki (that's a negative btw)

ducati , nice exotic stroppy , expensive compared to a priller

rsv/tuono , I have one each of these , can you tell where this is going ? , mildly troublesome , but all the known faults earths ,batteries starter solenoids and alarms
both are gen 1's and the 2of them cost less than a 999

I have a ktm superduke too , well worth a look

mike

KTM Superduke doesn't appeal to me, I really don't like naked/upright bikes.
But I really fancy an RC8.

Factory clamps the problem? Have you heard of the same with oil lines? I see kits for Radiator hoses but no oil.

rc8? yup me too , its why I bought a mille ,couldn't afford the rc8 so got the next best thing (imo)
try a superduke it might surprise you
