Hi guys,

I am a newbie to the site, I am looking at buying a 07 plate 1000r can you advise me of any problems to look out for when i am looking, also what the service intervals are and the costs of the services. The one i am looking at has done just under 1000 miles.

Thanks

Regards

Jay.

welcome jay! :cheers it might be easier to answer your questions if we knew where are you located

not a problem, might take a while for a reply since its late in the land of Brittany.

how much work can you do yourself? you can save a lot if you can do your own oil changes, chain lubing, tire changes, etc.

i'd expect a valve adjustment and the sort to cost a couple hundred pounds though.

Service interval is 10k km, about 6250 miles, or annual.
Liz's 07 just had the first one, cost about £125 inc oils etc.
I think they need the valve clearances checking at about 10k on the later motors, that'll cost about £100 in labour.

Bits to watch for - look behind brake/gear levers for crash damage, clocks can fog up a bit. Keep it on an optimate or similar when not in use - the starter motor needs a fully charged battery to spin those dustbin sized pistons over and still manage a spark.

Replace the rear shock with an Ohlins or equivalent unit, the standard Sachs unit is a real POS. Whilst you are at it get some link plates from AF1 and swap them out too.

Back brake is a Factory order option, only available on the bike in it's Moldavia specification. It's a common source of complaint, it's tiny and often needs bleeding, which is very tricky to do properly. It's kind of redundant - there is masses of engine braking from the Rotax mill.

The bikes are very reliable, Falco's with 100k plus are not rare. Electrics are a bit weak - it IS Italian, but much better than a Duc. Build quality on the new Tuono model is very good, better than the Tuoldo IMHO.

Oil changes, brake pads, chains etc, very easy to do, engine a bit trickier. Frame has a lot of fixings that need service tools, so either invest or use a dealer.

Tank range isn't massive - 18 litre (allegedly) will only go to 100~120 miles before the warning light comes on, if you are caning it, 80 miles or less.

Other recommendations - it should have a set of Akra cans with it - they were free last year. Fit R&G bungs - especially to the rear engine mounts - it'll save the bike in a topple. Ermax screen is the best one in the UK, the stock item is a bit of a joke.

Thanks

Thanks guys, thats realy helpfull:thumbup.

V60 paul, I got most of your reply untill you mentioned AF1 and link plates what are they, sorry for being a bit thick!!!!!.

AF1racing is an American Aprilia dealer based in Texas that also hosts the Apriliaforum

A lot of the guys on here are also members across there

The link plates are replacement suspension lower plates that go on the bottom of the rear shock.

There have been a couple, maybe 3 or 4, reported cases of the stock items shearing on the RSVR which uses the same pieces. It's not a huge issue, but as HarryH said over on Apriliaforum - "You wouldn't let your daughter ride with those plates, would you?" In my case it's my wife Liz that owns the 07, so I swapped hers over. They cost about £40 shipped to the UK inc customs.

If you want the Ohlins - check out Ed's prices at AF1 as well, I got Liz's from them.

Sorry I am so used to everyone knowing AF1 I forgot to explain.

Another link to have is aprilia.me - the UK mail order Aprilia specialist
warning site contains Aprilia porn, you will experience severe lightening of your wallet.

Hey guys,

This shearing link plate thing. This effect 02 Mille...?????

Cos mine takes a real battering. As in any speed hump I hit I get air.:biggrin

there were a few cases of the rear shocks loosing all damping on the 07 models, mine had this problem, was hilarious fer a while ...no damping =1000cc pogo stick. but was changed under warranty no prob.
... so far i've managed to dial out the major gremlins but i am prolly gonna upgrade the shock later.

ya deffo want to get a proper Olins sterring damper if you are an agressive rider... unless you like rodeo riding

No.

It only affects RSVR's (04 on) and Gen II Tuono's (06 on)
The later model uses a different frame/swing arm and has a smaller cross section link plate than your mille.

I have read about 3 instances 1 in the states, 1 in NZ, another in Germany. All RSVR's.

It's a precaution only.

Thanks again

Cheers for the replies guys, they have helped a lot, i am going to give the Dealer a call on Tuesday to see if he can do me a deal on a part exchange with My Bandit 1200.

The one I am looking at is a Matt black one with the blue wheels, looks awsome!!!!.

Cant wait to have a demo on it as the only twin I have ridden before was a 749 ducati.

I will let you guys know how I get on.

Thanks again

Jay.:cheers

Good luck with the test ride, I love V twins, I tried an 06 R1 for 4000 miles but could not get on with it, I would imagine it should be spot on with only 1000 miles on it, don't forget to post up the pics

Sounds excellent. Same colours as Liz's.

I have taken the plunge into twin heaven

I have purchased the bike of my dreams, I missed the first Tuono i was looking at by a couple of minutes so I got back on tinternet and found another black one with akras, tail tidy, rear footpegs removed, Only done 1500 miles.

It was a bit more than I wanted to pay at £6000,00 for an april 07 bike but I just had to have it. Picking it up on Saturday all going well and the British summer dependant.

Looking forward to the ride back as its 135 miles away from my house.

I will post some pics up when I get it.

Can't wait.

Thanks again for your replies

Jay.
