The 4K rattle...

Hi looking to pick your brains again please....

My '03 mille has a rattle between 3.5K and 4K rpm. I wouldn't full throttle it at 3K so it only light to medium throttle.

It sounds like a chain rattle. Its not the drive chain ive checked that quite a few times and it sounds (for want of a better expression) 'enginey':confused

The bike has approx 11,000 miles on the clock. From the history ive got it seems to have been well serviced. There's no receipts for any engine work/repairs.

Im wondering what is the change interval on the timing chain?
What would be sypmtoms of a worn chain?
Are tensioners a weak point?

Ive just acquired a copy of the workshop manual courtesy of Ebay so the Halfords tools are on stand by :biggrin

Any thoughts?

Cheers

is it a top end tappety sound? I've heard it on nearly every std mille i've ridden. It's not so obviuos on those with race cans

well actually the front bank does sound a little camy but no its a different noise. very much a sounds like a chain noise. not sure how else i could describe the noise but definately a rattle as if something moving is vibrating, hitting, rattling against something else.

Glad to know the cammy thing is common though. Should it be both banks or is one more prone?

It also has a whine (think bmw mini power steering pump but much quieter) which gets louder and quieter in sync with the revs. Its has the same pitch as an over tight timing belt or alternator belt on a car just very quiet.

cheers

Does it sound like its grinding as I've similar thing? I've lubed the chain heavily at the weekend and it seems much better although still there (I was using Profi dry lube but general consensous is that its too dry). I'm suspecting rear bearings and/or suspension linkages being dry so will change them over the winter.

Let me know how you get on as it might cure mine! Pleased I'm not unique now though!

could it be the springs on the exhaust system im sure i can here mine sounds like keys jingling

Now that's a bloody annoying sound,I was wondering about threading a plastic sleeve over the springs but couldn't think of anything that would take the heat.
