suspension linkage failures

I have seen 2 sets personally that were very bad and 1 set belonging to Garin who posts on rsvr.net and club aprilia had to have his linkage replaced under warranty at 3000 miles due to the linkage having worn to the point of being unsafe. his warranty claim went straight through despite Aprilia not officially admitting a problem (yet)

ultimately the law suit currently underway in NZ against Aprilia maybe followed by others elsewhere will ultimately determine where it goes from here.

To my mind 7 crashes with 1 partially paralysed and 1 dead rider is enough to change my links myself for aftermarket versions. I had mine made by MPL for a few but you can get an acculign made version from aF1 if your worried about it.

The very latest on it was that Aprilia commissioned a structural test on a new and broken set of links which won't be made public but it was made available to the legal bods in NZ and it was intimated that Aprilia have goofed and the law suit has followed.

you can make up your own mind but i urge anyone with an 04 on rsv or 06 on tuono to think hard and at least look at your links for abnormal wear

100% what he said........:thumbup...i changed mine a year ago for Stainless steel ones

No uk supplier

i did post on here i think about getting Ti versions made and had a supplier ready to make them with half going to motosport in wareham for their customers but there were not enough takers to make it happen.

some of those were going to be a lowering version for vertically challenged riders who wareham seem to have a few of for some reason. short riders in dorset it seems.

Interested to know at what point you changed your mind. I am reading the thread on apriliaforum and up to page 16 you thought it was all *****.

Whatchanged you mind?

When i first read about it it was ONE failure then i read about 2 more so as someone was making a few sets up i thought its better to be safe than sorry.....comments from the first failure didnt help much either....long time ago now mate

When i took my plates off they had a few light scuff marks thats all....the bike had 7000 miles on it then

For most it went like this

1 or 2 is isolated, 3 or 4 interesting 5 or 6 a pattern etc etc.

The honest truth is no one has a definitive answer as to what and why has caused breakages and why unless coincidental have all but 1 been on Ohlins shod models.

For me the major thing that convinced me wa s Scott's crash. I have known Scott for many years through Aprilia ownership and he is no mug and on and off the record we have discussed his accident and the investigation that went on in NZ. What is clear is something out of the ordinary is happening.

Statistically it's still only 1 or 2 % of bikes sold that have crashed in similar circumstances but how many people crashed and didn't know what caused it ?
You have to make a judgement call and for £40 why take the risk for what is essentially 2 tanks of fuel. Statistically only 7 we know of have failed in the same way so your chances of not having a problem are very good but that statistic is little consolation if your the 8th.

At times the AF1 debate had become personal and lost it's way but with maybe a very few exceptions most were genuinely trying to find answers or mitigate the risks for others. If nothing else the af1 links look nice on the bike and most of you would think nothing of spending £40 on bling fo the beast.

This is the wear on a 3000 mile plate. 0ver 1 mm worn into it on a plate 5mm thick. You don't have to be einstein to know that's not good.

to right buddy, why take the risk for the sake of £40,as you say, some people
wouldnt think twice about spending that much on poxy anodised fairing bolt kits lol.
is it just the 04 onwards bikes suffering from this then, did i read right that the older milles was stronger/thicker mr.spoonz?

yes 04 onwards rsv's and 06 onwards tuono's

for some reason known only to Aprilia not only did they reduce the overall size of the link but they also moved the thinnest leg of the link to the highest stress area at the back. earlier links had it at the top.

The current part doesn't even match their own parts diagram that has the thin link at the top where it should be. :dunno

broken frame/rear suspension

Hi, Just read about rear suspension faults on RSV's , My 2003 rsv mille rear suspension broke away from the frame, breaking the lugs off the frame. Aprilia inspected it and said it was due to a bearing in the rear suspension linkage.
The bike had a full service and Mot three weeks before this happened and has been serviced by the same Aprilia dealer for the last three years, he has said this fault has never happened before and it was one in a million.
Lucky for me I was doing 30mph on a straight road or it could have been alot more serious.
This happened three months ago and neither Aprilia or the dealer are interested in sorting my bike.

Thats not very reassuring mate. A fatigue break i gather? Not raced or stoppy bulls**t? I cannot beleive they don't wanna investigate this problem.
