Supporting the bike when removing triple clamps

I bought a salvage title very beat up 2000 rsv 1000r, my first Aprilia. I have to remove the triple clamps as they are bent. I have the bike on a rear stand & on a front stand with the forks off, however now I need a way to support the bike without the front stand so I can remove the triple clamps. I dont have anything to hang the bike up by so I'm thinking I'll have to put some kind of wood support under the engine. Anyone have experience doing this?

Hi mate, yeah i did that put a peice of four be two underside of engine and used a small trolley jack to lift it up, had to do it a couple of times to get it somewhere neer steady, not the most stable but if you don't pull and push the bike about to much should be o.k, worked for me.:thumbup

Yeah I did the same, small block of wood & a bottle jack. There was only one place I could find at the front of the engine to jack it up on & as said not very safe
Undo the top yoke nut before anything else as these are torqued up pretty tight.

That's where an ABBA stand comes in handy, because the weight of the bike is taken on the swingarm pivot rather than the rear of the swingarm, the leverage is such that ti doesn't take as much lifting at the front.
I've used an old scissor jack to do the buisness under the motor. Go to a cobbler and buy a peice of deep rubber shoe sole. It's then simple to glue this onto the lifting pad of the jack, and helps save any damage.

I tried to support mine by putting a bar through the swing arm pivot & supporting on axle stands, I assume very similar to the ABBA stand. But there is too much weight at the front & it tips forward :dunno

Sorry see what your saying now :roll you use the ABBA stand & a jack

i put the bike on a homemade abba stand with 3 bags of sand on pillion seat. worked a treat

I use an abba stand and then attach a ratchet strap from the rear wheel to the stand to pull the front end up. Used this method a couple times with know issues. Changed the head stock bearings this way. I just put some timber under the belly pan just incase it went **** up but never faultered

i used 2 bits of t-shaped 3"x2"wood frames with notches at the top sat them under my top set of crash bungs also bit of wood underneath bellypan screw the 2 t-shapes together so they dont move apart i have a stand same idea as the abba stand only mines well better cant remember its name lol great thing it is ,my bikes last owner gave it to me (nice bloke ) but the wood works great for the front lift . some day i will make a stand made for the job from steel when i can be arsed lol.:thumbup

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I ended up make a stand out of wood & place it under the engine. All this to find the lower bearing race cracked in pieces. Triple clamps, both forks & the front rim all bent. I got the triples & the forks straightened today $160.00. Another week or so before she will be together & then I can fine ride the beast.
