first of all...im a newbie..so the virtual bar is open for anyone that wants one!

secondly...ive just bought a bike from a dealer (03 tuono) and am going to collect it on saturday. thing is, when i viewed the bike it had no oil in the oil tank viewing pipe. i asked him about this and he said that it was due to the fact that it is dry sump.

that sounds like poo to me???

now my question is... whats the score?

Oil has to be up to temp mate. You can only see it in the window when its hot. When you take it out stop after about 15 mins or so and look very very carefully. Its not easy to see. You can see it in the pipe. I mark my levels with a red marker so its a bit easier to spot it.
Hello.

Hello,

It is as Nobby said for checking, the system needs to be pressurised.

The dealer is telling you the truth, its a dry sump and they do this.

good good!

Most dealers do a check or even a service, pending how much money they have got in the bike. It is in their vested interest as the bike would not get far without oil when the engine reaches about 170c then the metal can start to break down. Luckily the Tuono 1000 engine is manufactured by the Bombardier group,,if you google it will see how high their standards are.:thumbup

yea all of the above i actualy did a oil change on mine do to the fact that idid not see any oil but it worked out couse the oil looked more like mud when it came out, now i put motul full senthetic and i can see it in the window.

Welcome to the fray. Lots of pommy bastards to pal with, an occasional Scot, and Aussie. Still trying to find another Canucklehead to play with here... Oh and Bombardier? Canadian. So...

BRP-Rotax GmbH & Co. KG, commonly known simply as Rotax, is an Austrian engine manufacturer. It develops and produces 4-stroke and advanced 2-stroke engines for Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) products (Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft and sport boats, Can-Am quads and roadsters) as well as for motorcycles, karts, ultra light and light aircraft. Over the past 50 years, the company has developed more than 350 engine models for recreational products and has produced more than six million engines.

What's a little Austrian influence...

Have fun with yer Tuono... we sure as hell do.

Hello, new here myself having just last weekend picked up a 2003 model and ridden it about 150 miles home. Can't really help on the oil beyond what the guys above said, but welcome to the forum and enjoy the bike. :cheers

Greetings dude.
No question on here is stupid. Many of use were puzzled by the oil level till we were educated by this anazing forum.
Enjoy the bike.

You can only see it in the window when its hot. it had no oil in the oil tank viewing pipe.
If the oil sump's dry and the oil tank's empty, where the fecks the oil?
Maybe the viewing pipe was full of oil.
Aldo the eejit.

Oh ****, I hate reading posts like this.... So have I put too much oil in? I changed my oil over the weekend and saw the book says 3.9lt, I put in just over 3lt then ran the bike for about 10 mins, it was showing low so I put in more until it was half way up the sight tube, that is where it still in now! I still haven't put in 3.9ltrs as I have some left in my 4ltr can.....

Phil
