Stripped Engine Bolt

Upon trying to install some R&G crash bobbins onto a friends bike I noticed that the engine bolt was very loose. While it doesn't spin freely and does require a socket wrench it seems to spin very easily and dosnt come off when undone, it just keeps turning but never comes off. He was sold the bike second hand, is there something im missing or would it be a safe assumption that the bolt has been stripped by the previous owner at some point?

Moving forward from here is there anything that can be done to get the bolts out to still use the R&G crash bobbins?

More importantly if the engine bolt has been stripped is the bike a potential hazard/danger?

The picture below illustrates which crash pad im referring too.

Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify, the nut is not the part that could be stripped, this is gripping just fine.

Your post is very confusing. You say the bolt is loose and yet the nut is holding tight? If the bolt is loose then the nut can't be done up tight. If you remove the nut from the end of the bolt it should pull out. The R & G kits come with new bolts and nuts.

It's removing the nut that is the issue, it turns with very little pressure but no matter how much you turn it it doesnt come out. Should I expect to have to grip it with some pliers to pull it out or should it just come loose and come out when I remove the socket wrench? Both sides appear to be the same, they also don't seem to tighten and just spin when turning the other way.

The engine mounting bolts you are referring to are 100mm long and are only threaded at the end where the nyloc nut goes. From what you are saying it seems that if you hold the head of the bolt steady with a socket you can turn the nut but it won't come off the end of the bolt, is that right? I'm also assuming that you are undoing the right nut? It's quite hard to get access tucked up behind the shock. The parts diagram below might help. The nuts are item 10, the left hand bolt item 3 and the right hand bolt item 7.

Is it a nut or bolt?

Basically sounds like you did not know there is a nut on the other end, which was news to me when i got my sliders too

Thanks very much for all of your replies, indeed Dynamo you are quite correct I was not aware there was another nut on the end and colinp much appreciate the diagram. The installation instructions for these mentioned nothing about another bolt, id assumed there was a thread holding it in, not another nut on the end.

Exactly

It is bolts 3 and 7 as you point out in the diagram.

Looks like it should be the case of getting access to the nut under the shock which will solve my dilemma.

Thanks again
