Stator, Starter, Rectifier or Other

Put a new battery in my CAPO Rally (2016) following bike not starting, check engine light (I don't have a reader), and the liquid crystal display glitching out - "0" mph speed or "250" mph depending on rev counter. I'm thinking it's the stator. Any other suggestions? How hard is it to change myself. The nearest shop that will work on the Aprilia Caponard Rally is 1500 miles away. Oh, and at the risk of giving away just how much of a novice I am, if what is a good way of testing the stator (I'm assuming I should just put the volt meter on the battery terminals while the bike is at idle).

Okay, found a YouTube video explaining how to test my stator and lots of great information about motorcycle stators . I found some oil in the cover and around the stator itself. There does not appear to be a gasket around the magneto in which the stator fits. Should there be? I don't see one in the service manual. It's clear the dry fit isn't keeping the oil out.

I had that with my Tuono RSV. It was the speed sensor, located on the rear brake hanger. The wire had perished and broken up internally. New sensor, no more silly 250mph readings.
Not sure if the Camponard uses the same type of sensor, but it was cheaper and easier than changing the stator (which I also did but for other reasons).
