stator fitted - now it won't start !

ok i fitted a new stator yesterday to my 04 rsv. the stator was from the older mille and fitted right on and was the same size. after putting everything back together, i thumb the starter and i just get a 'click click click' noise from the around the battery area. the dash also goes on and off in time with the clicking.

i ran the bike 24 hours previous to fitting the stator so the battery should be fine (just put it on charge this morning anyway).

i've not had a ride for well over a month and its really getting on my tits now :mad1

any ideas anyone?
cheers

yeah thats what its like with a flat battery, but before i put it on charge, i was getting 11.7v on my volt meter

11.7 normal is probably a lot less under load. Certainly batt would be first suspect.

I hope i'm wrong but keep a close eye on your dash voltage for a few hundred miles. The earlier stator i'm pretty sure has thinner windings designed to work with a different flywheel magnet arrangement. i have a suspicion your stator may overheat.

Have fitted an early stator to a later spec engine

Guys done over 500 miles so far with no issues

i took off the new stator today to install the old one. when comparing, the width of the replacement one (off older shape mille) is about 1mm WIDER than my 04 stator.

i put my old stator back in and it fired up.

Take your old stator and get it rewound. Most towns will have a rewinding engineering company. Failing that speak to electro sport as they do Stators and might rewind it.

It must have equal or thicker windings though or it will destroy itself. Thin wire cannot take the heat it generates.

think i've found somewhere local to rewind, but how much could i expect to pay and how long would it take? out of hours so will have to wait till tues to ring them.

just found a breakers that has a brand new stator 'lying around' for £80 (£250 at aprilia!). going to pick it up this afternoon. fingers crossed its the right one !

ok picked up the stator yesterday - its for a 2003 mille but is brand new - measured it against my fried stator and was exactly the same measurements.

i fit the new stator last night. thumb the starter button and the motor barly turns over, as if the battery is almost dead.

got up this morning and found out why.............

when i loosened the bolts on the stator cover, i thumb the starter and the motor spins like its about to start (didn't start properly because the oil tank is off). i tightened them again and the motor struggles to turn/start as if the battery is almost completely dead.

i put back in my old fried stator again. tightened all the bolts and motor struggles to spin to start. loosen the bolts and it spins quick and starts.

i used loctight instant gasket (silicone) and when you tighten the stator cover, the instant gasket spreads to the outside. i still had my old gasket which split in to 2 when i took it off. i managed to put the cover on with the old gasket, tightened up all of the bolts and the bike starts !!!

so this means you have to use an actual gasket for the stator cover and not instant gasket silicone or the stator goes in too far (about 1mm - the thickness of the gasket) and jams everything up and stops the bike from turning over when you try to start it!!!!!!!!!
