Starter relay

mark58

Tried to start bike this morning and just getting loud clicks..With the freezing conditions and being in a cold damp garage, I assume the relays sticking? Just wanted to give engine a run as not been started for a couple of weeks..

The solenoid (evidently) can be a problem, but I'd recommend checking the battery voltage as your first port of call.

Use the Voltmeter in the dash. Dunno what value with the engine not running, but I'd guess less than 12V would not get your fired up! With the engine running at 4k, you should get 13-15V.

It is the original battery, but connect it to an optimate once a week..Did that this morning and straight up to all LED's lit, so that should be ok..Getting an healthy sounding click so I think its the relay sticking, will check voltage on battery as well just to be on the safe side..

Bid on a relay on ebay just in case..We'll see..

agree with the above, these are big engines to turn over and need the battery to be in tip top condition. Plenty of threads on here to help, but look at upgrading the battery and starter solenoid, use the correct starting technique and use of an Optimate charger for starters!

Well..Battery checked out fine, and went in this morning and fired up immediately..I think the relays on its way out and with the intense cold it wouldn't switch over..Today its milder so started first touch...Going to buy a relay just in case as its been well documented on here..
Got to say though, that in 3 years and 28 thousand miles, this is the first time its failed to start..
