Starter/ignition fuse blowing

Hi all,

New to the forum, thought i would try for some tech advice straight away!

Took my 2003 out last night and after refueling try to restart , short spin then nothing, forecourt investigations found the ignition/starter fuse blown. Spare 15A fitted, retry, fuse blown. Replace fuse, ignition on, bridge starter solenoid, running!

My guess would be a solenoid fault and i have one on order but im seeing lots of wiring faults listed on forums, anyone experienced this before?

Thanks

Normal etiquette is to introduce yourself before diving in with questions but I would start looking for a short circuit, break in a wire etc

As you suggest, I'd definitely start with starter solenoid replacement. Worth keeping a spare anyway.

Make sure you don't buy substandard Chinese aftermarket unit, as some can short internally and you can find bike trying to start itself with no human intervention!!

Lots on here about suitable Yamaha units, but there are some good quality aftermarket units available too from reputable agents.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips, and yeah short intro then cut to the chase, sorry. Good news is its sorted! Had a mooch about, checked and cleaned earths, recharged the battery (new 12Ah any way but couldn't hurt) put a new fuse in and the blighter fired up, I was distressed. Any how, if you whip the fairing off the mounting bracket has no edge protection at the fuse box, the yellow and red wire had sorted to earth.

Glad you got it sorted and thanks for the info:thumbup Must check that next time I pop the fairing off.
