Hi, I am after a bit of advice please. I want to buy a new chain and sprocket kit for my 2001 rsvr.I have read loads of threads with recommended upgrade sizes etc....but still unsure what to go for! (Is there a difference between earlier and later models)? It currently has standard 17/42 with a 525/108 link chain, but I was thinking of a 16 front and maybe a 42/43 or 44 rear. I go on long GP journeys,(no track days) so didn't want to go down to 15 on the front really. Also I was thinking of going for a steel front & rear for longevity unless anyone wants to try and convince me? I like the did x ring kits......any buying links / advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The gearing did change from 04 bikes onwards as they had revised gearbox ratios. Everything pre 04 was 17/42. I would deffo go 16 on the front, whether you go up at the back and how many is personal preference.

I tour a lot and preferred 16/42 or 16/43 which made the bike geared better for the mountain hairpins but kept the motorway revs sensible.

I've got 16/44 on my 2000 and if I am on motorway/long A roads (which is not that often) does sound/feel like it needs an extra gear when I'm at speed....guess depends on how often you're doing it

Although I've not had it on that long so maybe just need to get used to it

I have 16/44 fitted to my bike. It seems to be a nice compromise between stock and a 15T front sprochet.

I bought my chain and sprocket set off Tash (Xtreme Performance Solutions) from the forum. Excellent sercvice and advice.

Hi Slick,

Personaly I would go for Renthal sprockets 16t front and 43t rear(hard anodised), with Renthal R4 SRS gold chain. I have sold loads of these kits to people on the forums and always had good feedback, I can do you a kit for £135 delivered. Let me know if this is any good.

Cheers

Mark

I had 16/43 on my rsv, and now ive got 16/42 on my 04 tuono. Tuono was 17/42 when I got it and a 16 on the front feels soooo much better. So i'm after just chain and rear sprocket now, will stay with 42 on the back. It feels just right on the motorway at 80.

You stock 42 rears Tash, if so how much for 42 rear and chain ??

Richie

ive got 16/44 talons on my 2001 with a gold did chain,it makes it a lot easier around town and suits me fine for the mad *** country road runs:thumbup

Alright lads, the Griffmeister recomends Talon sprockets for the ape:biggrin,so good enough for me have 16 front 42 rear ,fitted for about a year and still in top nick
ps am afraid i still haven't had the honour of the griff workin on ma bike ,i think a scottish griff session is on the cards:devious:devious:biggrinhint hint

I found I had 16/42 when I changed mine the other day to 16/44

16/42 was good I liked it but felt it needed a little more poke so hoping the 16/44 will be a winner.. Not had a chance to try it yet as rained since!

Cheers for all the advice Lads, I have just taken the plunge and gone for a steel Afam 16t front, Afam 525 qx gold chain (108 link) and a supersprox 43 tri metal rear, for £160.Thats only £60.00 over my budget!! looks like we'll be living on Bread and Lard for April....Slick.

That is EXACTLY what I had on my '02 RSVR. The supersprox never showed a jot of wear. And never had to adjust the chain during the 3k miles after having new tyres on. Good choice bud, I'm sure you'll be made up with em. Shud last for ages too so good economy really even tho it feels like a big hit now !

I know it's all personal preference but I've never understood the need to gear it down through the sprockets? It flys through the gearbox to start with and lifts for fun.
So what sort of speed would you lose from the top end then on average?

Dave

Hi Dave i run 1 down on the front and up 2 at the back and only lose about 15mph on the top ,but as ive said in an earlier post who wants to do 165 on the roads anyway but for the track exceleration wins everytime.......and m8 trust me if you do this mod youll wonder why you didn't do it earlier, and lets face it thats why we buy these bikes over tourers.....:devious

All you need to know is HERE dude. I found town riding much easier/smoother going down one tooth on the front.

Now then my bike is an 08 rsv r ive just had a look at the sprockets and mines got 15-39??(wot is standered) its doing 70 at 4thou and 150 at 9thou all you boys seem to have something different?? I was thinking of going down a tooth on front but not sure wot to do now? Im not bothered about top end just wont more umph!!!! HELP

Hi John ive the same model as youre self but there were some revisions 08 on but what they are ,pass ,your rear sprocket sounds a bit small i think the original gearin on mines was 16/44 but im no expert im on 15/42 and what a difference and you dont have to lengthin the chain but if someone has changed yours so much the chain might have had a link or two taken out so worth a good look just to be on the safe side........

On my 07 I had the stock 16/40 and a 190/50 rear and it was just to high for much else than touring and highway riding (I was getting 55mpg if I babied it) I went to a taller 190/55 and to a 16/43. That gives me a taller tire for better turn in and gearing that after the taller tire that is essentially 1 tooth higher than stock. Raises my overall 6th gear cruising revs about 150 rpm.

IIRC, 07/08 were both 16/40. Not sure why someone would bother with such a change of 15/39???

Use the gearingcommander site I just made a link to in my above post to figure out what gearing you want.

I just tried that gearing thing i must be thick as pig **** cause it didn'y make any sense to me:dowhat:dunno
