Spragg clutch looks ok. How can I tell if faulty?

Had a few starting problems lately. After turning engine over repeatedly it eventually started and ran ok but not before making a lot of nasty sounding noises. Spragg clutch slipping I assume? Removed my spragg clutch tonight with a lot of help from a good mate (thanks Steve). :thumbup Now it is off we can`t see a lot wrong with it. Nothing broken. springs look ok. Turning it by hand it seems to work properly. I know that is not a great indicator because the starter will obviously put it under a lot more stress. To be honest I don`t know what I am looking for.:dunno can anyone point me in the right direction please? I can put some pics up tomorrow if that will help.

I've seen one that looked good but still slipped. It was replaced and no more slippage. As you've removed it I'd swap it for a new one as a matter of course.

You are look for signs of wear in the sprag housing, that is the gear that the sprag sit in, does it have 2 parallel score marks running around the inside of it ?
How loose are the cam lobes in the sprag gear ?, they should be nice and tight.

most of the times it's only the spring! :)

I think that is probably the case as tightening the spring seemed to make it work properly. However I bought a bmw one and have fitted that. Now I just need a gasket.
