Just bought some new S/S 316L bolts for mounting the discs "nice an shiney" and ok for brake discs. fitted them to the front then went to do the rear and noticed the speedo sensor. Do the bolts on the rear disc have to be magnetic for the sensor or not????

YEP they do, titanium and the likes no good on the rear

can the sensor be adjusted to close up the gap between the sensor and the bolts or is it simply a case of needing to be magnetic? I too have changed my rear bolts for some nice shiny S/S ones.

That's just damn typical. Never mind, I'm trawling through RS catalogue to find some decent zinc plated instead otherwise the old one's are going back on. Thinking about it, does all five have to be on for the sensor to work or will one do it?

I'd have thought it would need all of them. Otherwise it would just think that the wheel is turning a lot more slowly than it actually is.

i'd say stormer is on the money. all 6 i reckon. also, does anyone know if its possible to magnetise other bolts ie stainless etc to make them work? i know sometimes screwdrivers end up magnetised by accident. magnets aint my strong point !

You can magnetise anything with iron (Fe) in it (which includes steel) by using an electric current, but it won't last as long as something made properly to be magnetic.

Thinking about it though... isn't it the magnet on the sensor, not on the bolts? The bolts are magnetised to the sensor not the other way round I'd have thought? Otherwise you'd get random crap sticking to the bolts all the time where as the sensor is only magnetised when the ignition is on. The bolts still need to be magnetic[/i] (i.e. Iron based) but do not need to be magnets themselves.

Your absolutely right, but it thought i'd give it a go anyway and actually got no reading at all still which seemed strange but must be something to do with the way the sensor is set up. All 5 are back on and everything is now sorted, which is a relief. It was very much guess work when it came to zipping past speed cameras over these last few days. I was using the revs, gears and engine note in my efforts not to set off the bloody things. I have to negotiate 7 in just 5 miles if I want to take the shorter route home. Needless to say I'd rather go the long way.

Aye stormer, after i posted i was thinking about it then realised the whole ferrous/non ferrous thingy ... my speedo doesnt work anyway and its gonna be the sensor as ive cleaned all the bolt heads to no avail. hope the sensors aint much money as im getting bored of going too slow thru cameras and my mates zipping by haha. where is best place to get one ? worth buying a second hand (with chance of it being near end of its life as well) or just punt on a new one ?
thanks
