Speedo not working

Any tips?
Tried undoing the connector at the back and cleaning/WD40'd. Wheel sensors are fecking expensive so looking to check everything else first. Ebay shows one sensor at £76 plus delivery:crazy

Had bike in garage over winter, dead battery as I didn't optimate it. Got it started but no speedo, new bat, still no speedo. Occasionally it fires up silly numbers like I saw 455mph while I was trundling through a 30 zone in second???

So what else can I do to try to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Theirs lads breaking bikes on RsvZone and Aprilia Performance, check em out. Is the sensor all clean ?

The speedo sensor works by counting the disc bolts as they go by.Are the bolts clean? You have'nt changed them to Ti or summat have you?Ducati 749/999 speedo's are the same.A mate of mine changed the manky disc bolts on his 749 and the speedo stopped working.
Just an idea.

Clean everything, like KB says the nuts the sensor the lot, then disconnect the battery for an hour, then connect it back up and reset the dash etc. See how you go then.

mine's stopped too.

Hi Guys,

Found this thread as my speedo has just stopped working too (06 Gen 2 T). I understand I should make sure the bolts and sensor are both clean as a first resort. Can anyone post a picture or give me a description of where the sensor is/what it looks like?

Is there anything else I can try to get it working before I decide to replace it?

Thanks.

Its item no.3 in this pic.
table_40-70.jpg

Its bolted to the plate that holds the rear brake caliper.
I dont wish to sound rude but,....should you really be fiddling with the sensor,if you dont know what it looks like?

Thanks Keith, that diagram was very helpful. Whilst I may not be the most mechanically minded person I think I'll be OK to check if it's plugged in and/or covered in dirt:grinning

Ok,thats good.:yes
Check the sensor and disc bolts, then follow the wiring back to where it plugs into the loom.Check the connector.
Those sensors have been known to fail,....so dont be suprised if you dont find anything wrong.

piece of piss to change it oot. One wee bolt an running the cable thru tae the connectors which is located in a wee rubber shroud , sits in front o the clutch housing.

10 min job even fur themair kakk handed spanner monkey.

Quite a regular failure on Ts and 70 odds quids aboot tright fur them as weel.

So, the speedo started working again fine the day after it originally stopped. Then this morning it started showing 188mph while the bike was sat still with the engine running, the mileage was clocking up at this point too. I took the sensor off and cleaned it and all the bolts. I then disconnected the battery for an hour and then reconnected everything. Still no luck. Is my next option replacing the sensor or could there be another solution? This problem has seemed to coincide with the cold weather, would that be contributing or is the sensor kaput?

Are all the other functions present?

IE temp, time etc.

Hi Aldo, yes all the other functions are working fine. Just the speed read out is showing 0mph when moving and occasionally flicks up to a random number, even when the bike is stationary with the engine running.

wid say def the sensor then B min.....

....jist tae let ye ken, when mine went it started the same way by showin random mental speeds for a few days then one day ah had washed the bike then went oot fur a run and it shorted and blew that actual inner part richt oot so it was hangin by the wire. As it had shorted it blew two fuses, which controled the starter circuit and the fuel pump. Left me deid at the side o the road. Everi thing wid light up, needle sweep roond as usual but nothin on the button. Of course ah never twigged it was fuses till a got hame efter pickin it up wi ma trailer and checked everything ower.

Ah reckon these sensors can suffer frae the slow ingress o damp an water ( despite supossedly bein a sealed unit ) and thats what was causin the weirdness. Ahv still got the auld buggered sensor hung up in the lab tae remind me.

Jist lettin ye ken......
