So i thought i'd swap out the plugs on my 2004 tuono amd after buying new plugs, bendable wrench and watching a decent vid of how to change the plugs on youtube i thought id have a crack at it last night. All was going swimmingly - near sides plugs swapped without removing the air filter housing. On trying the off side i decided to remove the air filter housing for access as i was unable to move the spark plug caps with normal access/ finger tip touch. The air filter came away easily but surprised to see a few mm of oil in there?
Once access was sorted the lower cap came away with some gentle persuasion but could i remove the higher!! Its bad enough not being able to get a decent grip on the plug but i aint small and i was swinging on the cap as best i could with my finger tips. In the end the ht lead came off but still left with an unmoveable cap. In the the end i submitted defeat and tried pulling at the rubber boot with a pair of pliers. That was no good as the rubber just came away. I then proceeded to attempt to grab the plastic body which just disintegrated. At this point im starting to panic and wondering how the fcuk can i get this thing out with just a socket set and pliers. One last attempt before i admit defeat and the bloody thing just lifted out as though it was never stuck!! I didnt know whether to laugh or cry.
Comparing cap model number it looks like its been changed and its one without resistor but dont think this matters from what ive read. It appears that the plugs have a miniscule amount of rust on their caps so perhaps being at the front of the engine they may get a little moisture inside or perhaps they are the originals? Either way ill stick some silicone grease on the ends before i put the caps back on. A quick scour of the web and i found a replacement cap for less than a tenner. Not a total loss but a complete pain in the arse!
I wont be leaving the plug caps to chance again and will remove every winter for peace of mind.
