Hi, this is my first rsv I have owned, I have had it for a couple of months now. If I leave it for 2 or so days it dosnt want to start, there is plenty of battery power to crank the engine over but it just dosnt want to start. I changed the plugs the other day but it still happens, it smells like it could be over fueling but im just not sure:confused has the same kind of think happend to you or know whats up????
Thanks a lot. Jon

Make sure your starting the bike correctly - use the cold start lever and not the throttle and don't keep cranking it over cause you'll just flood it.

Might be worth checking the battery is tip top and that your charging circuit is all OK, usually starting issues come down to poor batteries, crap starter solenoids or loose terminals/electrical connections.

Have you any other issues with the bike, such as cutting out when rolling up to junctions/lights etc...? (Could be that the throttle bodies/CO need setting up)

Welcome to the forum as well. :thumbup

As AMB says, the most common fault for poor starting is a weak battery and tired starter solenoid. Make sure these are tip top and replace if in doubt. Do a search on battery and starter solenoid

Hi, well that makes sence because when i take the battery off to charge it when it runs flat from trying to start it, i put it back on fully charged at it starts straight away. How do i check the starter solenoid? I always use the chock on the handle bars to on cold start and do start the bike up in the correct sequence. there is a little round black thing on the right hand side of the bike that can turn but the cable has snapped, is that anything to do with the fule volume??
Thanks very much for the reply.

If the battery is suspect don't mess about otherwise you'll get into the realms of sprag clutch failure through repeated attempts to start the bike. Go for one of these which are good value

See how you get on with this. Uprated starter solenoids are about £30 from Yamaha, straight plug and play, part numer 4KD81940-00 or speak to Griff aka fusebox on this forum who has some in stock.

As RSVkwakers says keeping the bike hooked up to an Optimate IV is really a must if the bike is not used daily as all vtwins need a hefty draw of amps for reliable starting

ok thanks very much for the advice, is the uprated starter solenoid a 100amp??? I'll def get a uprated starter solenoid and battery and hope this dose the job. Dose anyone know if the little round black thing on the side of the bike connected to a cable is anyhing to do with the fule??
Thanks

Jon, need some more info on the little round black thing, not quite sure what you mean by this.

Uprated starter solenoids are 150 amp i think

Hi Jon, the little round black thing is the tickover adjuster if I am reading you right. It isn't connected to a cable system, and actually has a pressed style end which as you wind the adjuster in it pushes the mechanical adjuster to increase tickover. Have you wound it all the way out and removed it? :dunno Is that why you think a cable is broken?

I suspect you may be talking about the fast idle adjuster, see the piccie below, I have circled the adjuster in red:

Make sure you resolve your starting issues cause the alternative repair is damn expensive. :dunno (Sprag)

Yes that is the one, I took the fairing off to look at it to see where it goes but it dosn't connect to anything but it looks like it did do at one point, ill take a pic of it tomo and show you what it looks like, hopefully its ok but we will soon find out.
Thanks Jon.

It just has a threaded section mate that presses on the throttle lever mechanism and raises the idle slightly, it's only about 7" long in total.

Start the bike and screw it in until it raises the idle, once warmed up to say around 76 degrees unscrew it until the idle is around 1250rpm +/- 100 rpm.

Job done :thumbup

Just so I am sure, how is the correct way of starting the bike?? I think im doing it right but its best to be certain.

Apply the cold start lever on the left clip on regardless of it being cold or warm, ignition on and let the fuel pump prime. When it stops hit the start button for a few seconds and it should burst in to life.

If it doesn't burst in to life then you have a problem somewhere and need to get it checked out without delay.

As soon as it fires up then move the cold start lever to a position that regulates the idle at around 2300rpm, the rpm will increase slowly as the engine warms up. Once you see the engine temp hit about 46 - 55 degrees you can usually push the lever fully off.

Job done.

Well that's how I do it. :nana

Sorry, off topic, but: Amb; is it your bike in this pic ?

Yes mate!

Now you have my attention are you gonna take the p155 and say 'It's about time you cleaned those conservatory windows'? LOL :devious

LOL; never gave it a second thought mate......:biggrin

No, in actual fact Amb, I`m going to nominate it for November ROTM, as I think it looks the bollox, and is a credit to you ! :thumbup

(This pic`ll be on the ROTM thread very shortly)

Cheers mate. :thumbup
