Smoking 02 Mille...

Hello. My 2002 Mille has suddenly started puffing out clouds of oily smoke from the exhaust. Its totally fine when started from cold, but when started from hot (or if allowed to idle for a while and then ridden away) it chucks a big puff of smoke out. Any ideas?? Cheers.

Sounds ominous, is it a blue hazey smoke which would indicate oil being burn't in the combustion chamber or a dark sooty smoke which would indicate an over fueling problem

In most engines I've come across this would indicate valve guides and or stem seals.

I'm sure someone with more aprilia specific info will answer shortly.

Cheers

Since you said "oily smoke" I'm not thinking white smoke which would be steam & would mean the breakdown of a waterjacket seal. Leg's question directs you to where the problem might be coming from. I'm leaning towards a valve train issue since you said that the smoke appears after running and not after cold start. Try to get it inspected soon..letting it go will result, at least, in fouled plugs and poor power characteristics. Best of luck and I'd like to hear if our distance diagnosis is close?

Thanks for your replies. The smoke is a darkish blue and is not emitted constantly, it smells vaguely oily and not of unburnt petrol. The problem came on so suddenly that I'm hoping that it is simply a failed valve stem oil seal (you have to be optimistic about these things!). I'll take it into my dealer to see what they think - the valve clearances are overdue a check any way. Thanks.

has been none for the slipper clutch seal to have tear in which this is the same sympton. i know as it happened to me and i though fook valve seals and all it was was oil creeping past the slipper seal because my rh engine casing had a slight crack in from when i slid off if thats any help:thumbup

i'm with Rs3 on this. before you go down route of expensive top end investigatiion pop off the vac pipe that runs from the clutch housing to the Tb's and plug it and see if the smoking stops.

Good thinking fellas, there's also a one way check valve that can fail on RSV Mille, i'm assuming this would give the same symptoms? The valve is on the right hand side of the engine when sat on the bike, just below the throttle boddies, sat inline of a thick vaccum hose. It's cylindrical made of white plastic about 2 inches long. Prise the one way valve off and if you can blow though each end, the valve has failed. Note which way round it goes though, there is an arrow pointing one way.

If you need one the Aprilia part number is 8102741 priced about £9.50

check the air box isn't full of oil. Wheelies etc can blow oil into it and cause the bike to smoke

I've finally got round to having a look at a few things. I removed the clutch cover to take a look at the diaphragm. There was a fair amount of oil on the outside of the diaphragm and a tide mark halfway up the inside of the cover - and I assume this should be the dry side of the diaphragm.

I haven't actually removed the diaphragm to look for holes yet but there is one odd thing - according to my Haynes manual there should be a large plate either side of the diaphragm but mine only has one on the inside. On the outside is just a large washer. Do I have a plate missing or did things change at some point?

I had this problem with an 04 RSV R, mine was a torn Diaphram, changed with one from eBay, £20 and fixed. your diapragm should have a small washer on the inside, small plate, diaphragm, large plate outside, second washer and finally the Non-slip nut. Takes 20 minutes to change.. Tip for you, to avoid splitting the diaphragm on replacement cut a strip of cardboard to go under the diaphragm while you tighten the bolt.. remove before putting the cover back..

http://www.geocities.com/sl_mille/clutch.html shows the same clutch assy on the falco
