Hi, can anyone let me know if my 2001 rsv mille has a slipper clutch. I have checked out various sites but can not find any answers. My mate recons it has. obviously i dont want to go out and bang it down a few gears to see if the back wheel locks up or not. cheers Andy

If you plan on testing its functionality, make sure you have the throttle closed before banging down the box....

yes mate it has a crap version of a slipper clutch will still lock your back wheel up trust me! treat it if it hasnt got one:thumbup

rs3, it shouldn't lock your back wheel up fella, are you sure the one way inline valve on your bike hasn't failed?

mate you took that to literally or maybe the way i said lock up what i meant was skipping down the road under giving it the gee gees.
nobody who races uses these original clutches and all change to stm that for me tells you alot........
the only problem i have had is the diaphram splitting giving you the symptoms of your rings or valve seals going loads of blue smoke out the exhaust and you thinking the engine is fooked when it was a hair line crack in my casing that started it from when i slid down the road.....replaced the diaphram and casing (from southern cross cheers again andy and don for parts:thumbup)
as good as new as for the valve nothing wrong with it:thumbup

Nice one fella, i agree, STM is way to go for track work but for road riding the standard vacuum assisted slipper clutch should be fine :thumbup

i agree mate :thumbup and is fine for the road again depends how hard you ride..:devious
the best bit is !just shows how advanced aprilia were over the japs years ago ::thumbup

I use my STM on the road only its fantastic when you're being really aggressive.

Must say I'm quite new to the Mille but I wouldn't ride mine (02) like it was a slipper, does tend to lock up. Maybe need to adapt riding style as come from an R6...I dunno? :dunno

the pseudo slipper in my old zx7r was better than the oe slipper in my mille

Fellas maybe it's just me but i have no issues at all with my slipper clutch now. Last year whilst riding in the French Alps, the back wheel started to lock and skip on gear down changes, causing a few twitchy moments whilst braking hard through the twisties. When i returned, i replaced the one way check valve that's sits on a vacuum line between throttle bodies and the clutch. This valve is prone to failure and causes the rear wheel momentary lock up as described. The part is about £8.00 from Aprilia and i've not had a problem at all since replacing the valve

it really depends how aggressive you ride, with the stm I can do things that would have spat me off the bike with the oe slipper clutch(which worked correctly)
with an aftermarket slipper clutch you can be extremely aggressive and you dont even get a little skip at the back. Horses for courses really, if ones happy with the oe clutch thats all good then.

Cheers CK, i guess i'm not that agressive on down changes as i tend to use the torque of the engine more than banging down the box from high revs

each to their own really on this one.

I've never had a full blown slipper clutch in any of my bikes. Its all down to riding style, I try to as smooth as possible under breaking and down changes slipping the clutch out by hand anyway so I never really notice.

Although I have noticed the really fast boys (top end of the fast group) smash down the box in a way that wouldn't be possible without a slipper clutch and ths is where they make their time up.
If I was racing i'd get one but IMO £450 notes can be better sent on trackdays/tyres etc etc.
