Help Please!!

What is the size of the socket required for the rear axle on my 2003/53 Plate Tuono?

I have a rediculously loose chain and need to tighten it but my socket set doesn't go anywhere near the size required. If any one can offer a step by step idiots guide on how to tighten it all up I would be most apreciative!

Thanks in Advance Bri.

G'day Bri, You can check the alignment of wheels by using the notches on the swingarm, where the axle locating blocks are.Or a more precise and teedious mefhod is to "stringline" the front and rear wheel. ie. take a length of string long enough to reach 1mtr(each side) in front of the front wheel and around the rear wheel . The gap on each side of the front wheel should be the same, eg 5mm. If the bike corners easier through left corners than right, then the wheels are probably not aligned. The rear wheel is not following the front wheels' track. The maintenance book that comes with your bike details the chain adjustment procedure. Hope this helps what every rider should know how to do.
:cheers

Don't use the marks on the swing arm, they are nowhere near precise enough.

If you want to check it thoroughly lay a piece of straight wood against the rear tyre and check the gap both side to the front - use two bits of wood if you want :) lots easier than string.

Alternately measure back from the swing arm spindle to the rear wheel spindly both sides, but you need to be uber accurate this way - 1/2mm on the spindle will be ~4mm out of alignment.

Thanks Guys but it'd the size of socket required to loosen the axel. Not the socket size of teh adjusting nuts. Its the big one hidden under the crash potectors in the photo below.

Your help is greatly apreciated.

i dont know the torque setting sorry,,,,and yes i am scottish but live in the isle of man these days

Nice one Weejock. Thanks for the help. Maybe see you @: the TT next year.

Dude, please do not think that I am being sarcastic because I am not, but as an owner of a high performance motorcycle you should really know how to adjust your chain properly. Basic maintenance knowledge is a must!

Please please please, if you don't know how to perform this task, take the bike to a dealer and pay them to do it and ask them if they can teach you how to do it yourself.

People really do not pay enough attention to the importance of a correctly adjusted and lubricated chain, and the results of poor maintenance can be catastrophic.

Get it wrong?
If you are lucky it stretches you chain, chews your sprocket and maybe damages the gearbox output shaft seal.

If you are unlucky the chain snaps and lunches your engine.

If you are really unlucky the chain snaps and locks the bike up and you fall off and hurt yourself.

If you are super unlucky you fall off and are severely injured or worse.

Sorry for the rant, but bikes are already dangerous enough without playing russian roulette while riding.

Rant over!!

If you are anywhere near East Midlands contact me, come round and I will teach you how to adjust it.

Patrick,

Thanks for the rant! I just wanted the socket size for the axel nut! 32mm apparently.

Adjustment will take place tomorrow after I am the proud owner of a new shiney 32mm socket.

Not near E.Mids - but you can sure come up to Scotland and adjust it for me.....Joke! My Mrs works for LLoyd Honda down the road so no need.

Thanks all.

It's 120Nm rear 32mm and 80Nm front 30mm
if you need info like this look at the AF1 site under Techtips, there is a mountain of info available.

Cheers Paul,

That site is brilliant! Looks like I'm going to be in the garage this weekend now! Might even ride the T after I have adjusted everything......

I am hoping to be up at Castle Douglas Wed to Fri. 1st week Aug with the wife in car . Thursday Stewartry Show in day and Kirkcudbright at night. I try to avoid the guy in Kirkcudbright who recruits for a tug of war team against the locals . I will try to get up on the T some time maybe

:cheers

Do it! There are some great roads up here, ideal for getting that v60 lump all revved up!

Hi Guys, I've been told 120Nm by dealer (as quoted by V60Paul) (can't find it in owners book) but that seems way too tight for me! Had a quick look at t'other aprilia site and they seem to think the same - suggesting 90 -100Nm. seems Haynes suggest 120Nm could be too much and suggest 100Nm. I'm a little confused! Pals RC8 is 90-100Nm. So I'm going for that! Don't think it'll fall out!

Oh dear! 90-100-120 I'm going to go half way with 105.

I will ask my local dealer next time I'm in, which will be 30th of this month, I'm getting a new chain as discovered a couple of tight spots...Going for the gold option to match th erear swing arm. Will post photos of the new shiney power delivery mechanism once fitted.

Incidentley! can anyone advise on suggetsed cost for a new gold chain? I was quoted £90.00 and wondered if this seemed right?? If anyone can advise a better option for my chain I would be willing to investigate.
