Hi all. Can any one please help. I stupidly ran out of petrol yesterday. After i got the bike home (in a van) i put a gallon of fuel in her. Now for some reason she wont start. I have checked the fuel filter which is fine and i can smell fuel when she turns over. The battery is now flat and on charge. Any help would be great guys. Thanks rsv 69. Ps its a 2000 rsv mille

Same here read my thread " fuel issues ".Still not sorted still in bits.Fact is its the most unreliable bike ive ever owned and cant face another summer of ringing recovery to pick me up.

I felt the same last summer bud but when she runs its the best. Just read it mate and i will try again tomorrow. Stick with it

Do all the "reliability" mods, battery, sidestand, solenoid, brown connector, earth strap, and you'll never look back mate.

she fired she fired!! just let her stand for a couple of days, charged the battery and on the second go she fired. fook me i felt like i won the lottery!!!!

Lucky man sounds like it just needed some fuel pumping through and a good battery charge. As for me i give up with mine up for sale as seen back to Japan and reliability.

Bud noooooo stick it out

Starting issues sem to be common to this bike. I have a 2001 RSVR and have found cold starting aproblem if the throttle is touched, also semi warm starting, ie the dash says cold start, but bike does not like the cold start operated; better to use no cold start and some throttle.
Re electrics and flat batteries, I use an Optimate charger and leave the bike on it when not used. Recently, the charger showed that the battery was weak, although it is pretty new.Pushing the stop engine switch made the difference and the charger is now happy and green! Reading the owners manual, disconnecting the switch is advised. Am I correct?

That all sounds a bit odd :confused. Where in the owners manual does it say that??

It makes no difference to my charger if the stop switch is left in the on or the off position.

To improve starting do the charging system mods, get a better battery, get a 150 amp solenoid and finally fit uprated (killaprilla) starter cables.

Not trying to be smug but I think it's down to the way they are looked after :dunno I've have my 04 RSVR for 7 years & it's never let me down, the only mod i've done is change the solenoid to a 150A one & I change the battery every 3 years. I put mine on the optimate the night before I want to ride it & it always starts easy, full choke, no throttle

If you think these are unreliable try owning Jap 2 strokes :roll

Re the owners manual recommending that the stop button is pushed in, I may have misinterperated; page 27 mentions pushing the button in if the ignition is left on, as the battery could discharge, but the next line shows the button depressed and ignition off!? Apologies if I have misled.

Re sprockets , is it worthwhile reducing the front by a tooth, as claimed by Bike mag?

Most people seem to lose some top end to get some more acceleration. i.e. Add a tooth or two at the back sprocket and lose a tooth or two at the front sprocket. Look at this to see the impact...http://www.gearingcommander.com/

I dropped 1 tooth on the front which is a great improvement, some go +2 on the rear as well but IMHO this makes it feel like riding an IL4 :dunno
