Hi All.

Does anybody know, for definate, what the rules are regarding sevicing, and warranty claims?.

I purchased new Aprilia from local dealers late last year and also took out the extended 2 + 2 year warranty on the bike.

I have just learned that they are now not part of the Aprilia franchise and cannot carryout services on my bike.

Does this now mean that I have to take the bike to a recognised Aprilia dealers to be serviced to keep the warranty up as the nearest one is approx 180 mile round trip, ( unless someone knows where theres a nearer one, im in the Middlesbrough Area ).

If this is the case, does the shop have any obligations to help me out.( THEY ARE NOT THE FREINDLIEST OF PEOPLE TO START WITH), though wont mention any names at this stage.

The only reason I bought the bike local was in case I had any issues with it I wouldnt have to travel hundreds of miles to get it sorted, I could have saved £500 if id have bought from further affield but didnt want the hassle of travelling.

So my question, do the services have to be carried out by Aprilia Dealers in order for the warranty to be honoured?. :dunno
Thanks to all in anticipation, :thumbup.

I am in the same boat as yourself as I have fallen out with my local dealer. My biggest hope is that I have no more problems with the bike in the next year and then it wont matter as the warrenty will have run out! I would still be interested to know though as I suspect going by the last year that something else will go wrong!

I think there was a european legislation which said that provided servicing was completed in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines it could be done outside the manufacturers network without invalidating warranty.
I guess the problem may be proving it has been in the event of a claim.

Hi working for a bike manufacturer I can confirm that the bike will not void the warranty providing the servce is carried out to the the manufacturers guidelines. I would advise you to use the correct service sheet (checklist) and only Aprilia parts. The manufacturers do not like this as work is being taken away from there dealers. The only concern you will have, if the bike is just out of warranty and you are maybe looking for some goodwill against a fault, because the bike has not been serviced within their network you will get none. Keep all receipts and service sheets as proof, including VAT receipts. (Good old block exemption)

Cheers solstice.

I do hope this is the case, :biggrin

Do you know where would I find the manufacturers guidelines and or european legislation, :thumbup

ohhh Me me me, I know!!!!! LOL

BER AKA Block Exemption Regulation regarding servicing of vehicles within the manufacturers warranty period is pretty straight forward. It came in to force in about 2001 - 2002 and stated that owners had the right to have their vehicles serviced by non franchised dealers as long as the service is completed to manufacturer specification and parts used are of equal or greater specification to that of the manufacturers.

Most manufacturers will adhere to this ruling but be warned they will make your life hell in getting claims paid for warranty repairs. If there is the slightest doubt that a part is not of the acceptable standard then it is the owners responsibility to prove the part to be of the required standard, this of course could cost thousands of pounds.

In short, take it to a franchised dealer it's less hassle, trust me!!

Thanks for info amb.

If I carried on getting the bike serviced from the dealers I bought the bike from, would it not be up to them to fight the warranty claim, after all they were once franchised Aprilia dealers so would assume they would use genuine Aprilia parts for servicing :dunno

Like someone said previously, use a franchised dealer and the chances are if a warranty claim is denied they may assist you with goodwill.

If they are not franchised by Aprilia then they won't be able to do warranty repairs. Best bet is to stay within the dealer network for servicing and repairs, once your out of warranty get Griff to sort it for you.

What a minefield, you can't even rely on the franchised dealers to carry out work properely when they are in the dealer network.

My local Ape dealers are also Suzuki ( and Kwacker,Moto Guzzi,Piaggio,CCM )

and the service I had from them regarding the new Suzook when I bought it means I wouldn't trust their guys within 6 ft of the Mille.

It was sold by them originally and serviced?? by them last summer before I bought it. They didn't do the valve clearances then at 12.000 miles apparently as they listened to it running and said 'Doesn't need checking as it's nice and quiet !! ) WTF

The previous owner did ask 'But what if they are quiet because they are too tight? ' but the techy just walked away muttering and shaking his head.

I have my doubts if the valves have EVER been checked,as I'm sure they wouldn't have bothered at the first service and they certainly havn't done since,it's now on about 15,000 miles and I must book in at Griffs soon for peace of mind.

Bloody Dealers,right up there with b(W)ankers & MP's. :jack:jack:jack:jack

They aren't all like that mate, some good technicians in the dealer network, it's just murder finding them.

It may be worth asking Griff if he can do warranty work, being ex Aprilia they may well allow him.

Don't deal with the dealer over the warranty servicing matter, call the warranty company and ask them if it will be OK to get the bike serviced by a VAT registered garage?

They may surprise you! :thumbup

Amb,

I think the warranty company is Aprilia themselves, and apparently they have stopped offering the 2 years extra on new bikes. :confused

warranty

couldnt help but check in in this one even though im on holiday in portugal, this is abloody minefield lads but listen to alan , he is the man on this subject no mistake , he and i have had very similar jobs , he´s still doin his!!!

they cannot refuse a warranty as long as it was carried out by a proficient technician and in accordance to the manufacturers spec....make no mistake they will fight it and threaten them with trading standards all you like they will take it all the way to the steps of the court room but then fold ...
as long as evetrything is inplace correctly and properly and you have proof that all work was carried out then they by law cannot refuse but they will make it as hard as possible for ya!!

my advise dude...if possible take it to a good franchised dealer , if this isnt possible take to someone who knows the drill and is prepared to stand with ya shoulder to shoulder if it does come to that .... ive done it before for guys mate so it isnt impossible!!

I understand that your a million miles away from me mate so if you can give me a PM with a location i will put you in touch with a good dealer who i know and would trust!!

ive had words with manufacturers about this in the past and they soon shut the F#ck up when you tell you aint no mug and know the score.....the businesses best kept secret isnt it!!

donr worry mate the chances are there wont be an issue anyway!!!:thumbup

hope this helps

Check the terms and conditions and find out exactly what it says, if you can't understand it and want some sound advice then scan your policy booklet or letter, send it to me and I'll be able to advise you correctly. :thumbup

Just cause you warranty handbook says Aprilia on the cover it could still be insured and managed by another company. :eatcorn

He who dares wins.
The warranty will be covered by Aprilia UK or claimed through the factory themselves,
as previously stated due to block exemption the ownus is now on the manufactruer to prove it has not been serviced to Manufacturere standards. Again make sure you follow the guidelines set out by Aprilia.

Hi Nige.
I actually got a phone call from the dealers I bought the bike from, with an apology.
The salesman I spoke to the day before gave me the wrong info, they can actually carryout the servicing and any warranty work on Aprilias they sold until Aprilia find another franchise locally, so chuffed to bits, :thumbup.

Thanks Griff.

You are very highly thought of on this forum and I can understand why, thanks for taking the time out (even whilst on your holiday) to reply. :thumbup
I was told when I bought the bike that the dealers were having problems with Aprilia and were no longer going to be selling Aprilias, however they assured me that there would be no problems with servicing or warranty as they were still carrying out all the work on bikes they sold until Aprilia found a local franchise.
I was then told by a friend earlier in the week that this was not the case and the dealer could no longer do warranty work, I then phoned them and was told by salesman that this was correct, after a long heated discussion , and threats of trading standards I put the phone down on him.
The following day, I received a call from the shop with an apology, telling me they had made a mistake and can still do the servicing and any warranty works as told origonaly, so feeling much happier now. :biggrin
Apologies for long reply.
Thanks again Griff, and to everyone else who replied to this thread. :thumbup:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup
