Second Service Costs

My bike was serviced last June so is due for another now. I was waiting to get it running on both cylinders before I took it in but thought I would phone up for a quote for the service.

I Just phoned up my only local decent Aprilia dealer and a Normal service is £160 + VAT + Parts.

My bike has done 7000 miles at the moment but was told at 8000 miles it is due a BIG service including clearance checks etc etc which is £250 + VAT and Parts! So that's going to be about £350 maybe even more depending on the parts it need!!

I think I would be best waiting a few 100 miles and then get the full thing done?

What have others been getting charged for the full service and anyone else been in the same boat as me in regards to milage vs year servicing schedule?

I assume by clearance checks they mean valves. Aprilia moved the service interval for valves to 12500. Only out of the ordinary thing near 8k is rear linkage checks/grease which are supposed to be at 9500 but most dealers seem to ignore it. I would check it yourself though. with a decent abba type stand it's quite easy.

Only thing that is recommended in time over mileage is oil changes as oil deteriorates used or not (absorbs moisture) Valves etc don't

i would just get the engine sorted Dave says its the ECU, so no need to even get to the valves
oils filters etc you can do yourself, brakes and clutch easy also, regreasing the rear suspension linkage depends on wether or not you've got an ABBA stand and some patience.

get the thing running then assess the damage and if the service is excellent then go back for the rest

by the way i use Dave Milling and so far so good

I have the extended warranty on my bike so is it not best to keep the service book stamped up rather than do the service work yourself? Also if the Valve clearances don't need doing for another 5000 miles should I just go for a normal service?

I know of my local lads who do a great deal on a service for £160 which includes pretty much everything including new brake and clutch fluid suspension service etc etc. And I assume that because they are VAT registered they will be able to stamp the warranty book. Although I wont have a full Aprilia Service History I will save some pennies and I know I am getting a decent job.

Also what is an ABBA Stand?

The trick is to get an official dealer to just do an oil change once a year if your concerned about resale and stamp your book then do what you can yourself or via an independant. that way you still have an official service history. The service book just states it was serviced not what they did.
Valves are finicky and not easy even when you know what your doing.

regards the warranty the law states that they cannot refuse warranty because a non franchised dealer did work on it as long as it's done with parts and labour of an equivalent level. ie use aprilia parts where prudent and don't fit wang fang chu chocolate brake pads or chains and then expect aprilia to warranty the disc's or munched engine casings etc when they get eaten alive.

just got the Abba joke. Oh Dear

i fancied the blonde one (not the one with the beard i hasten to add)
