Hi guys, Xmas prezzie from Wifey, TomTom Rider 2. About to fit (finally) to BIG T. Any one had any experiences good or bad regarding fitting or using? Seems to be the dogs nuts, at least I'll be able to find my way home! Would appreciate advice on best place to pick up connections for charger unit?
Notice it has a facility for finding the nearest petrol station! THAT could prove bloody useful! My 'T' barely seems to do 30mpg!
Don't care, I love this bike!

I've just bought a used Garmin Zumo off ebay and it only came with a cigarette lighter charger so I then bought an aftermarket mains charger off ebay for a few quid :thumbup

Here's one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mains-Charger...286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:15|39:1|240:1318

Don't know if the Tom Tom will be the same but the Garmin charges when connected to my laptop via USB.

Annoyingly, I'm having to buy a few mounts to go with it and can't believe how expensive they are! :thumbdown

I think I understood your question? :dunno

Sat nav is great if you use common sense with it.
For fitting theres an american company that does loads of different fitments.
You can get specific fiments for clamping to the bars i think the Tom Tom comes with this as standard, did you get the bluetooth helmet mic? Interested in going bluetooth for my on bike starcom unit.
As for using - in Germany we followed a mate who had a Garmin on his GS, we ended up going down a forest track.... so my tip for the day is if it looks wrong it is wrong. stop and turn around. it will eventually put you back on the right track. He got a lot of stick for that. We now use it only as a guide. I sold my old Garmin and havn't yet re-newed, but will probably go for a Tom Tom if i think i need one again.

I went back and forth with the Tom Tom and the Zumo.

I ended up getting a Zumo 550 a little over 2 years ago, and I love it. For the long rides I have MP3's loaded in it. I like also being able to plan a trip on a PC and then load it into the Zumo. It has also saved me from running out of gas when you are in the middle of nowhere.

The Zumo comes with the mounting gear for tube styled bars but my BMW has weird clamps so I made a new mount using RAM mounts. RAM mounts makes a solution for mounting anything and everything to your bike. Just google them.

Hope that helps you out a bit!

Sat Nav thanks

Thanks guys! It comes with RAM mounting. Hopefully, easy enough? Mentioned charger (mislead you) but it comes with a lead to plug into mounting unit and black/red wire to pick up supply for charging. Wondered where the easiest/safest place to pick this up from in handle bar/speedo area?
Found out my phone won't work with this but there is a list of sutable phones that do and wifey's does! Headset works OK in house but just about to fix to helmet and test properly.
First time I used TOM TOM I ended up going down a cart track to the most superb farm house in Wales. No exit available! Turn round, try again and get redirected OK. 'USE WITH CAUTION' seems to be the message!

If the RAM mounting that comes with it doesn't work how you want it to, then just buy some additional parts. They are cheap enough and you will be happier in the long run. It is really easy to work with and figure out. I can't help you with where to mount it because I don't have a Tuono yet, I am still debating between a S4RS and the Tuono.

I have the bluetooth on my Zumo and Phone. I just use it to see who calls because I personally don't think it is right to be talking on the phone while riding. So if my phone rings, the number and contact info show up on the screen of the Zumo, if I think it is important then I will pull over and check voicemail/call them back. Otherwise I just wait until I stop for a break or get gas.

I would like to use the bluetooth for communicating with my girlfriend who also rides. For instance if I am a ways ahead of her and I come into a corner with a lot of gravel or a hazard, I can tell her to watch out or take it easy. Plus sometimes it is hard to communicate when we both have hearing protection in, full helmets on and the bikes running side by side. The best one I have read on is the Scala because the cool thing is you can transfer it from helmet to helmet, no drilling, etc.

Oh you may want to check and see if there is a firmware update, etc. for your TOM TOM that may update to work with your phone?

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for that, good points made. Yes, the headset is transferable - useful if wifey treats me to a new helmet ( hope she reads this!) By the way, suggestion :-
BUY THE TUONO!

No problem, glad I could help.

Another thing I did is wire up the GPS cradle to shut off when the ignition is off, then my Zumo switches to battery. I never wanted to go in for a bite to eat, come out with a dead battery because of the GPS. The draw is low from the Zumo but as we all know a car/motorcycle battery can take a crap in an instant and I wouldn't want the zumo to be part of the cause. I tied into a blinker on my BMW but I am not familiar with the wiring on the Tuono.

Funny, I just bought a new helmet last night!!

Thanks for the suggestion, it is a tough one about the bike. I also just found out that the Tuono deal may not be coming through as expected. We will see.....

Thanks, KLENNOP, a very valid point about shut off with ignition. Although I have to say, with some of the thieving toe rags about, I don't think I'll be leaving it on the bike! Wifey would go nuts if it got nicked!
New helmet, eh! Bet it all smells nice and fresh? Lucky you!
I need ear plugs and nose plugs with mine!

There are multiple things that make it theft proof, as far as mounting goes. I only leave mine on the bike if I am within sight otherwise it comes with me. Otherwise I may throw my jacket over the whole GPS and gauges, etc. so it is all out of sight.

Hi Wacker I have had my tom tom rider 2 for about 2 years and it works great on the bike or in the car with adapter its a extra but worth it the scala headset is very good and you can also get a scala with fm radio or extra headset for pillion or other bike . I took my power from the battery on a fused link it was the easiest option i did not want to upset the bikes wiring can-bus? or somthing like that , i have tried mounting it in a few places but ended up making my own mount, one mount that did work well but fouled the tank bag was a ram adapter that fits in your steering tube then you attach supplied ram bits to it simple and cheap about £7 from gps warehouse .:thumbup
