sag settings

K

kevcole

was up early this morning for some reason, so thought i'd make the effort to check and possibly set the sag on the mille.

from what i have read and watched on youtube, the going rate for a road bike is 35mm of sag.

now i'm no lightweight at 16st (i hide it well, :roll) i have found that the rear has 48mm of sag and the front has only 25mm.

so i set to with the spanners

with the front pre-load wound right off, i can still only get the sag to 28mm, the sticktion on the stancion is 9mm which is sort of average i guess for its age.

with the rear i need to remove the shock so i can clean and grease the threads as the locknut wont budge more than half a turn or so, it's either right at the bottom or just the threads are full of crap. but even with the half a turn i got it to 45mm of sag.

now for a bike with such good road maners, even on odd tyres, i find this strange as it's miles away from the regarded standard road sag settings, as it's far to stiff at the front and too soft at the rear. which confrims my assessment from yesterdays ride. i have to wonder with the correct spring rates to suit my weight these things must be awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!

as for damping and rebound, i have set it to the factory recommended settings as a baseline and see how it feels when we get a decent gap in the weather.

i have also put a ty-rap on the front fork to assess how much travel i'm using with my usual riding style.

and well done that man Max, aprilia's first WSB win on the RSV4. just a shame i would look like a gorilla riding a bmx on one :pissr

Wind in the front preload till it gives you between 25-30mm. Clean the rear unit and adjust till you get 30-40mm preload. You should also get between 5-10mm each end movement with the weight off the wheels. I fould half a turn out, preload and compression for the front. Half a turn out on preload and 12 turns out compression on the rear . I weigh 14st and these work well on my 2000 rsv.

will give the compression and rebound settings a nudge each time i go out, i usually fiddle with my bikes to get them how i like anyway so it's just a matter of sneaking up on um.

might end up giving the front pre-load a few turns yet as it's wound right out and still only giving 28mm of sag, and i'm a bit of a fat bit, so for some reason i seem to have harder springs in it. but we will see if it's bottoming out with the tell tale ty-rap on the forks.

i will knock up a stand to hold the bike up at the swingarm pivot, then i can remove and clean up the shocker

mines wound in to show two rings on preload. Any more and the front as stiff as a board for me. Try checking the oil in each fork. If you've got stiff springs anyway 28mm shoudn't be too far off.:thumbup
