Hi good people. My oil tank is starting to rust, what are my options ?

Take it off get it galvanized then powder coated. Put it back on, hook up the pipework and fill it with the correct oil to the required level and don't forget to renew the oil filter while yer at it.

Good man, what do you think I should be paying for galv & powder coat?

The mob I use have a min charge that would take about 300KG to go over it, so yer need to talk to them and see if yer can sweet talk them into doing a small job fir cash say a tenner and it would be much the same fir the powder coating. In my experience yer better going there and ask some of the dudes to direct yer to the foreman or whomever and offer him a wee handshake. It works a treat fir them wee jobs, he's happy and yer happy.

Yeah, got some wheels coated a few years ago, they put em through with a run of other stuff, cost next to nowt. Galvernising is something Im not sure about. I will ask around, see were its done nearby....Thanks again for advice man..

Ah jist can wait tae hear Gs answer .....

mah Gen2 wiz roostin as weel a while back so undid awe the bolts, gied it a wee rub doon tae loosen the worst an them a couple coats smooth hammerite. Did the trick and cost nowt tae dae.

garry, can you do that, if so, what is the cost?

of course you can do this yourself, it aint hard.

you only have the inconvenience of yer bike being down a few days, unless you can do a straight swap at the time.

as it happens i seem to have a spare tank, well 2 actually... gen1 + 2.

R,min the worst of the rust is the back of the ******, it needs to come reet off..

i,ve thought of plastic coating but i,m not a big fan, when that leaks/cracks or bubbles its a complete ball breaker then to put reet. thats why i would never plasticoat wheels.

just a word of warning boys !
powder coating involves sand or bead blasting
and if you dont get it all out of your refurbished tank you will **** your motor up !
so please make sure its clean
personaly i got mine rubbed down and painted by local bodyshop in black gloss and it looks classy

Agreed piece of pish

There's an argument for topping the oil up, and not bothering to wipe away spillages at the filler. The odd drop of oil will find it's way down the front and prevent rusting...and....there's a lesson here for some of the OCD sufferers too...
:yes

I always spray liberally the back of mine with ACF50 or Scottoiler. I don't suffer with OCD having to have a pristine bike all the time. As long as its liberally coated in the greasy stuff and doesn't rust I'm happy with that. Quick swill now and again and its back to normal. Have to get some rust off one of the pipes that runs under the bike before the summer. The pipes only about £20 so could renew it but its only an unseen bit of pipe which will look fine with a bit of hammerite on.

It keeps the bike in pristine condition that stuff. I paint it on with a paintbrush on all the nuts and bolts as well so no spray goes on the tyres. Stops all the oxidisation.

Engine is covered in the stuff.

I got a rag which has been more or less soaked in the stuff and I just go round the bike with it and as u say it keeps it off the tyres and also the brakes...
