Hi all, I have a 2012 tuono and I have now run out of fuel twice. First time I took it back to the dealer and they said everything checked out fine and the low fuel warning was working OK.

However, just ran out of fuel the other day and was only able to put 13 and a bit litres of fuel in the tank to full. It seems the machine is shutting down as it hits the reserve level which is why the warning light doesn't come on.

Any clues what is happening, is it an ECU adjustment or something else. I am waiting for the dealer to get back to me but I need some clues to start the investigation process going. Otherwise, I am sure they will say that everything check out again. Esentially, I have a 13 litre tank and you all know that will only get me down to the shops and barely home.

Thanks,

Tank breather pipe blocked / kinked causing a vacuum in the tank stopping fuel flow? Does the tank hiss when you open it
or fuel pick up pipe too short to reach bottom of tank
Looking at a picture of a fuel pump i notice it has a small pipe on it might be split and only work when under fuel and as your level drops starts to suck air APRILIA TUONO V4 R 1000 APRC 2011 Fuel Pump | eBay

My low fuel light comes on with 8ltrs left in her , seems like the two extremes. 09 model.

Sounds like a vacuum build up to me stopping fuel flowing. as above, does the fuel cap hiss when you open it?

Snowman - am guessin that his is a V4 n yours is the V2.......

Panther - maybe give griff a shout at aprilia performance... he's pretty clued up on everything Ape Wise...an more than happy to advise.

:)

Thanks guys,
It's not a blocked vent and the tank does not hiss when opened. I have looked at that already but thanks for the heads up, all possible issues welcome. The other stuff about fuel pick ups and pumps is next on the list. When the machine stops it just stops, no spluttering or coughing it just... stops.... bugger, always at the bottom of a hill or on the freeway. Anyway, thanks again and if there are anymore ideas out there please keep them coming.

I take it it starts and runs without any probs once yer fill the tank again. Once it's run out have yer given it some time before yer try to start it again?
Sounds like yer got a sponge or similar in yer tank.

Hi Aldo
I was waiting for you because you seem to have your finger on the pulse of these machines. Mate, I try to restart but it just won't have it. I filled it with about 13 litres of fuel, so I am guessing it is something inside the tank. My dealer is going to have to have a closer look at it this time because I'm over it. Starting to think that Tuono is Italian for "broken". It seems to have a few quality issues. Still an awesome bike to ride.... when its working.

Thanks, Bryan

I'm not familier with the V4,but has it got some sort of fuel vapour recovery system?
I had a similar problem with a Ducati Multistrada.I filled it up to the brim, but the low fuel light came on after around 60miles.(Thought the tank had split!)The fault turned out to be the fuel vapour system had got blocked and was fooling the tank into thinking it was full.A couple of miles down the road, the level settled down to about halfway,....weird one that.

p mucker yer brought a smile to my coupon wae "I was waiting for you because you seem to have your finger on the pulse of these machines."

Nothing could be further from the truth mucker, hope yer get to the source of yer grief soon. :thumbup

if you've not got a vacuum..then the problen would appear to be the fuel pick up level inside the tank.

Yours must be set too high?

Just a thought?

Thanks Tifa
I am discussing just the same issue with the dealer about levels, but of course, I am only guessing. He has contacted Aprilia to discuss the problem and I am leaning towards something like your suggestion. I will of course let everybody know what the outcome ends up being. I think the mechanic will "suck it and see" till he finds the problem.

is it a float type switch in there, I used to work for a firm that made hall switches on a float. the supplier used the wrong foam for the fluid involved and it caused a similar problem with the kit in question....

Thanks bgibrownepau,
Now we seem to be getting closer to a reasonable explaination of what it might be. I will give all these suggestions to my dealer. I get the feeling that if I don't come up with some possible problems they might not look too hard. We'll see.

So very tempted to do just that; but, that won't get the problem fixed.... or the next one....
