RSVR Factory 2004

I am new to this forum. Have been riding a Honda VTR firestorm which is a V-Twin. Have always loved VTwins and is currently considering buying a 2nd hand RSVR Factory 2004 model. I have seen the bike and it appears very very well kept but has done some 'racing' (trackdays stuff..he says). Owner is honest to tell me the fact that he rides all bikes 'HARD". He used to race bikes and judging from his garage and tools he has (5 bike stands) I get the impression that he is an enthusiast and a dedicated one. The bike has done 26000 kilometres and has service books to boot.

It looks immaculate and has every option under the sun installed including heated grips.

I am worried that I might be buying into trouble as it has done the 'hard' miles

I love it and considering buyin it but wish to know from Aprilia owners if that sort of mileage with some 'hard' racing involved would make this bike a 'problem' buy. It is obviously out of warranty and any problems of magnitude would be expensive. I dont have deep pockets..lol

Would appreciate a feed back as a decision to make the purchase has to be made in the next few days. BTW the reason the owner is selling the Aprilia is that he has just taken delivery of a Ducati 1098.

Thank you.

I'm coming from a twin too (Ducati S4R). My current RSVR Factory is a second-hand motorcycle and I haven't had any problems. What you have to do is go to Aprilia where the bike has been serviced so that they can inform you about it. They should give you a professional opinion of how the bike is and how it's been trated by the owner. Besides, you should of course carefully examine the motorcycle part by part.

Good luck!

Hello S.O.W and welcome to the site,
Firstly i once owned a firestorm too, excellent bike...
secondly the condition of the bike chances are if he was into the whole trackday thing then he probally had some other bodywork fitted to it to save the originals which he has now refited and are like new...
also to be fair "ridden hard" at the end of the day its a sportsbike and a damn good one at that if its been well serviced and maintained as it should then there really should not be a problem, but hey dont quote me on that...:biggrin
But what you also need to remember is that there is plenty more rsv's out there if yer not sure find another......:thumbup

Many thanks for your thoughts Sergi. Much appreciated. You are right about checking the bike out with the Aprilia dealer. The only thing is that the dealership knows him very well. He tells me they have a good and close relationship as he "takes the boys from the dealership to the track and teach them riding skills...". and yeah the log books shows regular servicing and at correct intervals too.

would 26000 klms be a lot of distance in 4 years when he doesnt commute with it? Although my 1997 firestorm is on 36000 klms and it is fine.

I am having another ride on it on Monday.

I rode the bike last week and noticed that it was a bit "clunky" especially on slow acceleration and just taking off. I know it has a different feel then a V-Twin with a 90degree engine. The Firestorm is relatively smooth in comparison. so I booked a ride on the current non factory RSVR and found it to behave in a similar fashion.

After an hours ride on the new bike I also experienced slightly "numbed" hands from the vibration thro the handle bars.

The bike I am looking to buy has after market Akrapovic and a commander system so I would expect the vibration to be less.

Another ride on it would confirm that.

tks to all here! Concerning twins' smoothness, ducati's 90º engine was much brusque to me than the aprilia. The 60º instead feels now more smooth, which was specially noticeable at low speeds, e.g. when entering the city. However, Honda's engine's are typically smooth to drive so the aprilia can be in this case comparatively brusque.

On the other hand, I also suffer from numbed hands which is a problem I also felt either on the s4r too. However, I think that vibrations won't be eliminated by akra or PC.

Guess we will have to live with it.....part of the passion I suppose...
