Hi Guys,

After 18K miles, I've finally joined the "my stator is knackered" club! I have an RSVR 53 plate, which is a 2004 model.

I had the symptoms of backfiring when coming off the throttle, followed by a flat battery when I stopped for fuel.

After charging the battery over night on my Optimate, I started the engine and tested the voltage across the battery at idle and at 2,500RPM, which gave 12.4v, i.e. no charge going to the battery. I disconnected the stator and measured the impedance across the 3 yellow wires, which was low at 0.5/0.6/0.3R. The vac output of the stator was very low, at around 3v instead of >=60vac.

As I'm not getting a decent output from the stator, I am not sure whether the Rectifier/Regulator unit is also knackered, however I've decided to firstly try a new stator. I am also going to replace the infamous 2 brown connectors with either solder + crimp connectors + shrinkwrap, or just solder + shrinkwrap.

So far I've drained the oil and removed the oil filter, however the hoses to the oil tank look like a bit of a pain to remove due to the clamps used. Any general advice on this would be very much appreciated.

I would also appreciate suggestions on the best place to buy the stator. I'm currently looking at Electrex World, which is £114 inc VAT: http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/G814.html

Many thanks,

Simon.

Hi Simon,

I have a second hand stator for sale, it is is perfect working condition. It was removed from an 07 dike with just 1500 miles on, the reason it was removed is the engine is going into a gen 1 bike the stator needs swapping. I am looking for £80 inc delivery.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark,

Is your XPS email address the best way to contact you directly?

Cheers,

Simon.

yes mate, or if you want to talk you can call the number on my sig and it will divert to my mobile.

buy the one off mark ... after market stators don't last 5 mins ... been there done that ... they ain't worth the money

Hi BB,

I recognise your name from the numerous posts that I've been reading on the stator & connector issue! Great experience and advice on here as always.

I've bought the stator from Mark. Fingers crossed that the Rec/Reg is okay.

Cheers,

Si.

Best or safest is to test it and then test it again as the reg/rec could still be toast.

Good news folks!

Yesterday I completed the job of installing the new stator, gasket, oil filter, oil, etc. I routed the stator's 3 yellow wires through the bike which was in one single piece, so I could remove the extension cable (and potential weak-link) that was used on the previous stator. Speaking of which, the old stator was fried brown and comparable to pictures I've seen from other users on this and other forums.

I started her up and tested the output of the new stator at idle speed, which was not yet plugged in to the Rec/Reg. This was giving just over 30VAC across all 3 measurements, which concerned me at first as I was expecting around 50-60V. However as this is a later model stator, I'm guessing that the lower voltage is relative to the lower power stator design. This is good news for the longevity of the Rec/Reg.

The real test was made when I connected the stator with the Rec/Reg, which gave between 13.5-14VDC on my multimeter and was a good indication that the battery was now being charged.

Thanks to Mark (Tash) for the fast delivery on the stator and thank you to all who sent replies on this thread. Photos and detailed advice are available at request, for any people with the same charging problem.

Cheers,

Si.

hi,think mines is also knackered.back to the question earlier,is there anywhere else apart from electrex world that sells these.cheers.

Hi rsvr-lex,

Just out of interest, what are your bike's symptoms?

Have you isolated the stator and tested the voltage & impedance across the 3 yellow wires?

Cheers,

Si.

Hi,basically the same symptoms as you, backfiring then flat battery.recharge then same voltage readings as yours.haven't done the voltage reading across the three yellow wires yet.cheers lex.

Thanks again Mark. I tested it fully on Friday night by riding it like I'd stolen it from Tony Soprano!

Rsvr-lex: Sounds like you've narrowed it down already. Hopefully you'll find either a 2nd hand OEM stator as I did, or go with the re-wind route as Kiwi suggested above. Let me know if you have any questions with the removal/fitting procedure.

Cheers,

Si.

Just fried my stator again on my 04 Factory. Had it rewound a year or so back and got a OEM rectifier from a breaker just in case. All seemed well until this week when the bike started stalling a little too often and the backfiring low voltage and finally stopped. Managed to get home on a spare battery.

Guess I'm stuck with having re wound, so any one recommend a good outfit for this? Also I will get another rectifier. Again I would welcome any advice as to where I might source a better after market rectifier?
